Life in Brief: Three Years of Tweets

L.L. Galarneau

A dump, really, of three years' of micro-blogging on the popular site, Twitter.

Just today, another railing article out of the UK pointing a finger this time at social networking for all that ails us in the world. What Twitter actually is: an incredible personal history archiving tool, a way to share mundane but fun details of life with farflung friends and family, a trend sniffer for what people really care about, a tool for freedom and contact when megalomaniacs rule. Also a tool for solidarity, compassion, committment and belonging. Sure there's the occasional hate speech, and sure there is bullying, but we had all of that long before digital media. Let's stop being so silly, worrying about 'the perils of self-revelation' and understand that it is bonding and sharing and their most fundamental and transformative levels. I share with you three years of mundane details of my life. See if you enjoy.

Love your intro and completely agree with it :) I like the concept, but think you can maybe do more with it - could you tell a story somehow, blend three or four different plots through tweets? or use a tweet or two as headings that you would then develop? I think you're right that tweets make up great micro-journalling, but to be honest, most people are not that interested in reading someone's journal unless they know them or they are famous in some way...

I like the originality of the, "prose." A suggestion is to use the "cherry pick" feature of the site. (Home Page for details). Good luck. Backed. Chuck

To be brutally honest, I think it is inconceivable that there is a market for tweets in book form (unless you happen to be a celebrity - and even then I doubt it).

But I like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Princess Bride and another film you mentioned that I forgot before I got to the end of the chapter.

My wife and I are from the Portland, Oregon area and lived for a year in Spokane, have a close friend who lives in Renton and I'm in a good mood.

Backed (If this ever makes it to the editor's desk, please send me a copy of HC review)

LIFE IN BRIEF
It always amazes me how much personal information people will write on Twitter. And this book is a good example of that very thing. It’s interesting – but at the same time, I think to really interest a reader, you need to organize this better. As is, it jumps from one topic to another so quickly it’s hard to keep track of your thought processes. Either way, this is a clever idea for a book. I’m adding this to my shelf. Dear L.L, This is like the most totally amazing book I've ever read. You're something else, to do all of this. Totally radical!! I love it. :) What a good read! You are like totally creative to think of this. :)
I'm BACKING/COMMENTING on your book to help advance it. :) PLEASE take a moment to BACK/COMMENT on my TWO Books, "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not" and the UNEDITED version? ."Tell Me True Love Stories"
Thanks, Susie :)

Ironically, I have wrote about my last 3-4 years of blogging, trying to raise awareness regarding an antidepressant named Seroxat.

I like your synopsis.

also wondering if you think I should keep the reverse chronological order within each year, or adopt a more standard, linear format? thanks!

happy to swap reads!

thank you, lovely people! I decided the datestamps were superfluous and removed them, so the only dates are the broad year categories. will think about organizing thematically: love, work, tech, good stuff (links), etc...

what do you all think about the @ references? very fundamental to twitter... maybe I could bio some of the important ones, like my friend Wendy? I LOVE reading her tweets... makes me feel a bit like we live nearby again.... also fun to watch her tweet correspondence with her husband, whom I adore (proud to say I introduced them)

Life in Brief – Three Years of Tweets

Hi LL,

You have a great idea here but you need to think on it a bit more. First there is the issue of the formatting which you will need to sort I fear or people won’t read it. Second, at the moment you need to think about how you archive or draw this together to tell a coherent story. I, like you, am a fan of Twitter and what it makes possible, I like you, think it may help change the world, particularly despotic regimes.

My suggestions for your great idea is that you bunch tweets together so that they begin to tell particularly stories, are grouped thematically perhaps. At the moment they are just random things with no real thread and I don’t think they are going to hold anyone’s interest, apart from your nearest and dearest, for long.

I suggest you have categories, politics, life, the universe and everything, people stuff…and write brief commentaries where required you can then create one of those little books that are on the counter at the bookshop that we buy as a discretionary purchase when we buy other books, it could be a real run away success if archived carefully enough. One final thought, you need to remove any tweet that has a hyperlink, unless this is going to be sold exclusively on a Kindle device, because it will just be annoying for readers that they can’t click to the link.

Best wishes and good luck

would love feedback about formatting and readabilty, and whether I should delete tweets, date info, add annotations (key world/personal events), etc.

or tell me to trash the whole idea! :-)
