The Rhythm of My Soul

Leigha Hoffner

My poetry from life experiences

I have been writing poetry all of my life. I began to write because I faced a very hard and difficult childhood and writing was my escape from reality. I believe that poetry is a person’s way of speaking in a way their heart and body can’t say. Poetry is the key to the soul. I have been inspired by a lot of different things in my life from love, hate, pain, sadness, depression, abuse to addiction, recovery, children and marriage. I am a mother of wonderful children who wants to make sure that they don’t make the same mistakes that I have made and in God’s will help save someone else from the hardships I have faced. I this is dedicated to my husband who has to deal with at my best and worst, for that I thank you. My great children, you are the true light of my life and for that I am forever grateful and thankful to the Most High for giving you to me.

I thought I was good at writing poetry! I find that I am lacking after reading your works. Divine words placed on the pages of your book! Very nice work and I wish you every success with it!

hi leigha, there are some wonderful expressions of love and identity, reaching out and being rejected, - as
well as being accepted and fulfilled, it's all part of it, the coming and going of different experiences. I liked the way you played with words and questions and explored them from all angles.
I found your experiments with ongoing rhythm very interesting and consider that as poetry they may be superior to your rhyming verse, where some of the lines sound slightly forced to fit the format. I liked the freedom of your freestyle.
I wondered if you had ever teamed up with a musician to transform your writing into songs because I think quite a few of them would be perfect when set in music, as rhythm is one of the outstanding features in your style. On shelf.

Hi Leigh,

I've thought for a long time that there is not enough poetry on this site. Yours is a welcome addition, honest, raw, genuine and unpretentious, I liked Elle's suggestions, perhaps setting some of them to music would be possible. Very happy to support your poetry, if I have to choose a favourite it would be Sad Day.

Best wishes and good luck

I support this kind of poetry to the max.
Seriously, good job.
I know its tough for this type of writing style to make it "big" but I definatly support it.
Dope.

I read quite a few of your poems and really enjoyed them. "This is for Mother" reminds me of my wife chasing after our 3 boys as they grew up. I backed your book because I enjoyed what I read. If you find time look at few of mine and critique some I would appreciate it. Don

Hi,

I have backed your book because I found it eminently readable
but have to cover 25 books a day just to keep my place on here.
If you would like a more specific comment please return the favor.
Good luck with it.

The Rhythm of My Soul will be an inspiration to lovers of Christian poetry, who will enjoy and take comfort from your work. I am totally unequipped to critique your writng, bit I'll be happy to back it for them. Have you seen 'Announcing Joy', another anthology on this site with poetry along related lines?

I grew up with a dislike of Poetry, I maintain to this day it was the fault of my High School English treacher....I think she was really an evil goblin pretending to be human......But through reading to my children, over the years, I;ve grown to admire and respect anyone who can write poetry....There is no learing process, you either have it in you , or you dont............I dont.......I dont even have the patience to complete a crossword, or play a board game to the end without cheating......So 10 out of 10 from me for being able to put this together....

In your intro.....you say.......to deal with at my best......typo.......to deal with (me) at my best..... thought you might want to change that......

Best wishes.....shelved with pleasure......

Leigha, I enjoyed reading your poetry of life experiences. Your poems really truely speak to real life matters and relating is easy. Backed.

Hi Leigha. I'm not into this genre so I can't really comment of the quality of your work within it. I can say your sentences seem to flow well and the feelings you express are nicely presented. I can back it on that basis. On my shelf.

I've been told that writing poetry is "simple" -- you simply let the words of your heart flow to the paper, but I've always found that I can't release my innermost thoughts so freely. You have a true gift. I particularly liked the second chapter, and the different emotions - from the almost too cheerful opening to the "I look at you..." It is hard to say goodbye, but there is a time and a place for all relationships. You've told the transition from hope to release beautifully. This was all very personal - and I wanted to let you know that I felt something. Good luck to you.

As a new formalism poet, you strike me as a lyricist! Have you set any of these to music? Backed!

I like the way that you've captured the emotions that many others can identify with.

Emma Philips wrote 877 days ago

Yoiu have a poetic language that comes alive new and fresh, with a perspective that is uniquely your own. I've read up to "I'm Just a Baby " and I I liked it as much as I liked "She Won't Cry" and "Only One," these three had that edge, that sensation a well crafted poem evokes.
I'd suggest you work on your rhyming scheme, though.
Good luck

This has to be backed as I love all it stands for. I have been where you have (not my childhood though thankfully) and so I understand where you are coming from. Writing does help indeed and by sharing your thoughts, emotions and feelings, it just may help someone else as well as you. I believe in God entirely and trust in Him at all times. The bad things we go through in life are the things that have taught us all we know and made us into who we are today. THEY are the very things I thank Him most for. My book may sound like I don't belive in Him, bit I believe all gifts are from God and used correctly can help others. Goof luck and I hope this does well for you. On my shelf. x

Thank you ever so much I hope that one person can learn from what i have been through and not have to make the same mistakes that have.
