Nickel

Anthony Lund

In a bleak future of ruin and fear, a man of the shadows is forced to become the last hope of humanity against The Syndicate.

In the last days of the world we know, a mighty, widespread power of evil called The Syndicate will rise and destroy everyone who stands against them. In Nickel, one of the last hidden pockets of human existence prepare to take a stand against the forces of the faceless Syndicate. In the depths of Old London, a secret hideaway beneath the once powerful city, visionary elder Stafford and young, reckless Nickel D'Raze prepare for the final days. As Nickel uses the power of shadows to enter the hostile world outside Old London to rescue lost humans, Stafford must stay below ground where a different but equally deadly danger lurks in the mind of another elder with his own dreams of power. An epic fantasy stand alone thriller which also forms part of longer work, The Syndicate. *Please note, there are some issues in the text with single quotation marks. The novel was originally written with single quotation marks and not all of these have been changed yet.

"careered" blindly into the darkness"? What's that mean? Couldn't get past the first line.

It means to run fast. the noun "career" means speed, and the verb "careered" is to move fast.

Hi Anthony, I've read up to chapter three so far. I applaude your style as it comes across fresh and entertaining prose. The lead into the story keeps the reader glued to the book as you pull them deeper into the crisis Tad finds himself in. I did notice you switched point of view in chapter three between Nickel and Tad.

In all it's a fine read. I've placed it on my watchlist and will back it when I have a spot on my shelf. Well done!

Well, Anthony, I am now backing your 6th book - what a struggle to preserve mankind against the bad people! Praise God for those who stand for good! :) I'm sure you've written many more books. I only have my edited part way done & my unedited memoir completed. I'm too sick (& can hardly sit at the computer to read, comment, & back books, because of my lupus) to finish & was hoping I'd get a publisher - it's almost 4 months on authonomy & none - mustn't be good enough - can't afford to pay to have my 13 years work polished. Hope you'll back them. :) Thanks. Love, Susie :)

Great idea with atmospheric writing laced with excellent imagery and characters that you feel live in fear. Like this a lot.

Very good start. It's definitely ninety from normal fantasy or post apocolyptic fiction. My only advice to you would drop more hints about what joining with the shadow means since it's a newer concept to fantasy. Best would be before Nickel is introduced so readers are not stumbling over it when he talks about it. This way, readers don't get thrown off the excellent pace you use, they'll already have a passing aquaintance with it.
Beside that, the story is very good and, as I already said, it has a great pace.
Backed, definitely.

Anthony: brilliant short pitch. Break up that long pitch into smaller paragraphs so it reads faster. End it with a question as well, hook your reader! Perfecting your pitches is how you climb in ranking to gather more exposure and comments to better your novel. The writing is good so I am SHELVING you. Glad I could turn your red arrow green!

Though I have been a very active member for over a year, I can still use your comments on my book when you get the chance. Every little bit helps. Cheers!

This is an imaginative story. You've obviously thought through the details of this future world because you're able to describe them so well when you tlak about your settings and your characters' actions. Nickel is a good main character; he's unique and brave; the kind of character a reader wants to follow to see how this ends. I'm adding this to my shelf. Burgio (Grain of Salt).

Anthony, I loved this story, many say the most important thing is to have a compelling opening, and you certainly have achieved that. The book is very polished--I enjoyed your style
The writing is stellar and descriptions compelling. I think you made some great choices with the characters and dialogue
I wish you all the best

I find that if a book fills certain requirements it's likely to be good. But first off there’s got to be a really good opening hook followed by a great first page that makes me want to go on; that’s what it’s all about when you present a story. If it still holds me, promises a good and well-told story then I will happily back it. "Nickel" started with a bang and just kept on coming at me till after three chapters I felt almost breathless.

“Nickel” ticked all my boxes and I'm backing it right away.

I love the feel of this, a fast pace with a dark vibe that really hooked me. Shelved.

I had two of your books on my WL, having come across them seperately during searches for reads. Both pitches drew my interest, and you are certainly multi-talented - you pull this dark fantasy off as convincingly as you do the humorous Grim Reaper. I'm seriously impressed, and a little jealous. Backing this one too.

Well, Anthony, guess I'll be first.
I enjoyed this, well written and fast paced. Some writers overdo it, not knowing when to drop the pace a bit, others put in pretty and whitty little overused monikers in an attempt to look cool, but not so here. You get what you see and it works. Wish I had some helpful criticism but I don't, because iit's good. Should go far I think.
