Prologue
The most she could manage was a staggered walk. She wanted to run but the chain binding her legs together pulled painfully against her pierced calf muscles with each stride. If he appeared now there was just no way she could escape him. Her heart pounded with fear as adrenaline rushed through her veins. A noise from behind her made her turn. Instinct caused her to flick the fingers of her right hand open. Nothing happened. From the moment she’d entered the complex her Powers had been useless to her. She didn’t understand what was going on.
‘What if I were the one who’d ruin your life? You know what, I can do.’ The dark male voice sung out from the shadows around her. ‘What if I were to tell you everything I knew? What would you then do?’
Not wanting the singer to get any closer to her she turned and started moving again. Her pace was agonisingly slow. The pain in her lower legs increased with each step she took. It was unbearable but stopping was not an option.
‘Don’t you get I’m poison for you now? And every sound you make is just you breaking. Don’t you get I’m living for that sound? However long it takes I’ll keep on waiting.’ The singing chased her down the passageway. ‘What if I were the one who’d ruin your life? You know what, I can do.’
‘Ah!’ The cry escaped her as a loose floor tile caused her to crash down to her knees.
Her lungs drew in a sharp intake of air as she braced herself against the pain of her calves. She willed herself back to her feet but it was easier said than done. The pain was too much for her now. It caused her head to swim and rational thought to move just beyond her grasp. She forced herself forward on all fours. It was harder going than walking had been but she felt as though she were moving faster somehow.
‘Do you need a hand?’
Without warning she found herself half crashing into a pair of legs dressed in a familiar pair of dapper white trousers.
‘Jack.’ Her whole being filled with relief as she stared up into the face of her mentor. ‘You were right about him, he’s...’
‘I’m very disappointed in you Two-Tone. I thought you said you knew what you were doing.’ Almost as soon as she was on her feet Jack grabbed her by her arms and held her in place. ‘I would never have agreed to this plan of yours if I thought you were going to get me caught out like this.’
‘Caught out?’ She couldn’t have felt more betrayed if he’d held a knife to her throat. ‘What are you talking about? What’s going on? Jack...?’
‘Oh shut up for once would you. Do you have any idea how annoying your voice is?’
‘Jack...?’
‘You really are the runt of the litter, you know that? You were always the last. The one I always had to wait on. Well I guess there’s one good thing about being caught out now. At least I won’t have to put up with you anymore.’
‘No... No...’ She struggled against him. ‘This... this can’t be happening. This can’t be real.’
‘Oh it’s very, very real.’ Jack’s voice breathed into her ear. ‘And what’s more we both know you can’t do a damn thing about it my little runaway.’
‘Runaway? No...’
‘You have to.’ Jack’s lips pressed against her ear. ‘You know you have to. You know what will happen if you don’t. You know the chaos you will cause if you go to them about this. You know it and I know you. Two-Tone is everything ready?’
The Hateling appeared in the shadows of the passageway. His pale skin shimmered in the dim light. Each step he took towards her and her mentor was slow and controlled.
‘How can you do this to me?’ She tried desperately to free herself from Jack’s tight grip. ‘Why? Why...?’
‘I’m trying to make you perfect.’
‘Perfect? I don’t understand. How can anything about this me make me perfect?’
Her mentor made no attempt to reply. Instead he laughed and dug his finger nails into her arm.
‘This is something to remember me by.’ The amusement on Two-Tone’s face was unbearable. ‘Remember me by this and you will know who I am.’
