Make Cake Not War

Sinead McNeill

A story of tea. More tea. And a case of mistaken identity.

Do you want me to tell you where you can stick your job?" Natalie is a karaoke-singing, tea-drinking, twenty-something day-dreamer. In her dreams it's all Brad Pitt, no work and an unlimited supply of biscuits. If only... Boyfriend Ben has morphed into a low-carb, high maintenance, work-obsessed gym freak. And don't get her started on Lucifer - evil boss and Queen of mean. Even her friendship with flatmate Clara is showing the strain. A bottle of Pinot and some kettle chips can get a girl so far; but when her best friend announces he's leaving town, Nat quits her job, and disaster ensues. Fleeing home, she's forced to confront the truth about her relationship, her career, and the fear of never finding true happiness. A chance meeting with Maria, owner of the local tea shop, leads to a new friendship and a fresh start. And then Natalie meets Alex... A god in the flesh, and a god in the kitchen - but he's a god with a past. Will Nat choose the safety of her old life, or will she have her cake. and eat it? Bridget Jones meets Chocolat, Make Cake Not War is a calorie-free, hilarious debut novel.

I LOVED this story, Natalie was totally relatable and it was chick lit without being fantasifical or ridiculous. Your choice of grammar and wording is perfect but i'm soooo p*ssed off that the second from last page said 'error loading'! I'll re-read when it works, love Alex, hate Ben and completely LOVE Natalie! Well done!!

I found this one languishing down near the bottom of the pile and it quite honestly deserves to be doing much better. Sadly, the writer seems to have departed. But she has left behind a complete, funny and entertaining book that is, IMO, better than some that have reached the ED.

I enjoyed this book. You have a terrific voice for the genre' and you create a sympathetic character in Natalie. The cast of characters that surround her act as a wonderful reflection as you build her character. Well done. Backed.

The sort of novel that gives Chicklit a good name, a rom-com taken at a cracking pace with all the humour, pathos and plot twists you could wish for and dialogue (plenty of it, watch out Roddy Doyle) that crackles with life. Unreservedly enjoyed - go, Sinead!

Sinead is a real talent, a possible chick-lit star of the future.

Make Cake Not War manages to be play around with the genre nicely. It ticks all the required buttons but also toys with your expectations.

It also have one of the best revenge scenes I've read.

Publishers should check this one out. It's a cracker.

Hi Sinead, This is exuberant and the writing style reflects that – good momentum and details about the characters. I especially enjoyed the conversation with Lucy before Natalie quit. And then her running into Brad certainly complicates the situation with Ben and the rooming. Enjoyable! Shelved – Katherine (The Swan Bonnet)

If you back my work, you may also want to approach BJD (a big supporter of my work) for a further read and possible backing of your book.

This is my kind of read but you have the right voice for chick lit comedy and I can see this doing well in the genre.

Good luck

Hi Sinead,
I liked this very much. It reminds me of the "Shopaholic" books and Bridget Jones, which I loved. Natalie is very endearing and I loved her fantasies. I will read more when I have time--this would be a book that I would pick up in the bookstore! You might want to break up your long pitch into paragraphs to make it more readable. Otherwise, great job!

I love your book, Sinead. :) Hope you'll read mine, He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not & my unedited version, Tell Me True Love Stories of He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not.
Please back my books. Thanks, Susie :)

Hi Sinead. As you can imagine, this is not my normal genre. However, I found this terrific. It does need a rather urgent edit just to iron out the punctuation/spelling errors, and I'd do that quickly or everyone will comment and not say much more. For instance, I do believe that the Tshirt will show off her perfectly formed breasts not breast. That aside, this is fresh, funny and the pitch is terrific. Great stuff and well done.x Carl.x

I was caught by the cover and the title then the funny pitch. Not my cup of tea usually but this was funny enough to keep me turning the pages! Jim Darcy The Firelord's Crown

This has to be one of the best chick-lit books on the site. Loved the notion that she'd have to have organ transplants/withdrawals in order to get a flatter stomach!! LOL

I intend reading much more of this.

Nice refreshing writing an absolute delight to read.

Absolutely perfect chick-lit! I love this sort of book- and would buy it just based on the cover art so I'm probably not the best critic! Anyway the story proper is so funny and edgy and hip! Great descriptive prose with a real gift for chick dialogue! BACKED 100%

This is great fun and a nice smooth read, I was at chapter four before I knew it. You've created a great supporting cast for Natalie, full of those to hate and those to like. I'm with her every step of the way as far as yoghurt is concerned and any girl who knows only sour cream and onion Pringles will do is one after my own heart.
This is witty and readable. Perfect.

While I'm not entirely sure what this story is actually about, your pitch is so good it made me open it anyway! I love good wit and you have good wit. Good witticism is positively poetic and you're a virtual Shakespeare - a writer after my own heart. I like this if you couldn't tell. And I can really identify with your opening sequence. I suspect most people can, and that's certainly a good thing. I'm putting this on my watch list until I can bump it to a backing. Kudos and best of luck! :)

Hello,

Really funny. I'm already hoping Natalie gets rid of Ben. I love the way you describe what Nat's mom really means when she says, "yes, dear." Really well written. Nothing stood out to me as being off. Your short pitch caught my eye. Your long pitch promised a good read and you delivered. This is the kind of book I'd read when I need a bit of cheering up. I'm happy to back this.

Hi

I just had a quick read of your book (chapter 1 only). You have a nice voice and a pretty fast pace.I like the idea of your story, however I had a bit of trouble reading it as you introduced so many characters that I was a bit lost.
Also when natalie wakes up it seems to me as she has too energy to be real. she asked so many questions. and when richard and clara comes into the kitchen why do they scream? it's early. Unless it's me being weird but when I wake up in the morning I'm on the slow motion.

Anyway, overal I like it and probably will read a bit more in a few weeks' time when I have a bit more spare time
Good luck
Tamara

Read the first and last chapters. It was nice to see her happy in the end because she clearly wasn't in the beginning with Ben and her self doubts bordering on low self esteem. Very nice and backed.

Good Luck

Why do people always feel guilty about being woken up? They do, though. It's hysterical and self-deprecating, full of energy and faultess as far as I can see. Love it. Backed Lynn

Light hearted and funny. I don't normally read 'chick-lit' but this is two in one day! I guess with all the vampires, murderers, death, demons, and mayhem in the Authonomy arsenal, it's nice to find some light and some giggles.

I don't think I've ever read about an abundant tea-drinking Karaoke singer before. Very english! Apart from being a lot younger it sounds just like me. Definitely a dreamer.
Fast paced and fun. Love the bit about having to have internal organs removed to achieve the flatness.
