Opening Day

Joe Perrone Jr.

Young girls are coming through a small Upstate New York fishing village...but, they aren't all coming out--alive! Learn the gruesome secret in Opening Day.

Following a close brush with death as an NYPD homicide detective, Matt Davis takes early retirement, and accepts what appears to be a cushy position as Chief of Police of a three-man department in a small, rural Upstate New York village. While out fishing on his favorite stream on the opening day of trout season, he stumbles across the remains of a body, barely recognizable as a human being, apparently murdered approximately six months earlier. With no real evidence—no clothing, no identification, and no clues—it’s up to Matt to not only find the murderer, but to identify the victim as well.
Woven throughout the story, are examinations into the pasts of three possible victims, all moving inexorably toward their unknown destinies. But, in the end, it’s the revelation of the unlikely killer’s identity that will shock this tight-knit community to its very core, and leave the reader begging for more.
Opening Day is the second in the Matt Davis Mystery Series, and picks up where As the Twig is Bent left off.

You writing style suits this genre well. Your mind must be a fascinating place to visit, as you think up such marvellous stories to keep us holding our breath. I don't spend too much time on each book, just enough to get the feel of the book, as I have a huge backlog of books to catch up on. You, my friend, have an amazing story telling ability, and once again I am happy to back your book. Eunice - The Temple Dancer.

Dear Joe, I discovered that you have 4 books of which I've backed 2, so will back the others. :) I love detective stories, having read all of Nancy Drew books in my teens. :) Great writing! :) Love, Susie :) Could you please take a moment to back my 2 memoir books? Thanks. :)

Love your writing, love the details about location and geography. Touches like this make it come alive. You are obviously a pro, Jo...oops sorry about the rhyming...I felt very safe reading this, although I hate reading books electronically. If this is published, I'll buy it.

Have backed it.
Lots of luck, will watch with interest.

Greetings, Joe!

Opening Day fires off on all four cylinders with the titillating scene of Matt vs. the women's undergarments- and then the danger aspect kicks in like a turbo boost via the strobes of the flashing knife handle. The questions immediately arise: How did Matt get in this predicament? How did he get OUT of this predicament? And you are quick to answer with the flashback of the "Chat Room Rapist" incident- still keeping the reader in suspense mode!

I like the vivid illustration you scripted pertaining to Matt and Val's relationship- it is evident that they love and care for one another, as Matt holds Val in high esteem and is respectful of her as she sleeps. I hope that Chief Davis is able to enjoy more hearty breakfasts- as it truly is the best meal of the day!

Kudos, Joe, on another professional novel! And the book cover is brilliant, too! Backed.

Shalom!

A great start - the recap is nicely handled, giving just enough info about the previous events to enable someone who didn't read the first book to catch up (and hopefully want to check out that book when they've finished!) Is his 'Val' Rita Valdez? I assume so, but it's not quite clear. Backed.

His "Val" is his wife, Valerie. Thanks for the nice comments.

You are one talented writer! This is a great example of crime fiction at its best. I spend every summer up in Turin New York State for a week with my family and so I can relate to your beautiful decsriptive prose but you have a true gift for down to earth New York style dialogue! BACKED with pleasure!

Joe--
You have some serious writing talent (misspelling 'Allan' aside). I especially like the way you vary your sentence structure, which is a pleasure to read. One suggestion -- maybe have Matt describe himself in more detail early on? I want a better picture of what he looks like.

This is a real old style murder mystery and a very good one. It has all the right elements, a sensible and capable police officer who will carry out a proper investigation, a decent team to back him up, an attractive setting (it sounded really pretty) and at least two victims. He'd only found one during the bit I read, but I feel sure there will be more.
A storng first person narrative, with changes of pov to the third person when we learn more about the victims. This works very well.
Backed.

They say don't start a novel with a dream or a prologue. In your case, ignore them. You've broken the rules successfully. Cracking opening. Good first person narrative introducing us to Matt and excellent device of telling stories of previous victims. Backed. Lynn
