Recipe For Lemonade

April Capil

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." In this short guide to rebuilding optimism, breast cancer survivor April Capil shows you how.

Diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer at age 34, in the midst of an economic recession that closed her small business and deflated her home's value overnight, April Capil found herself where most people did in Fall of 2008: Not Where She Thought She'd Be. Twelve months later and officially in remission, Capil looked back through journals to investigate just how she was able to make it through the toughest year of her life in one piece - how she was, in fact, able to make lemonade out of lemons. Not a memoir, but, more of a road map through tough times, RECIPE FOR LEMONADE is the story of how the way we see the world determines the stories we tell ourselves, and how looking for sweetness - in the sourest of places - can help you rebuild our optimism one half-full glass at a time.

Hi April!

Since you haven’t been to Authonomy for a while, I hope it’s okay that I’m sending this through your book comment:

I’d like to thank you for backing BRAINRUSH (a Thriller) last year. Because of you it hit the Authonomy Number-1 slot, attracted an agent, and landed a film option. Now that’s a brain-rush! The formal book launch is September 1st and the sequel will be released in December. None of this would have been possible without your help. So, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Sincerely,
Richard Bard, BRAINRUSH

PS. If you want a good laugh, check out the temporary book-trailer video on the BRAINRUSH website. It’s there as a placeholder for the upcoming professional video. The current one features children and it’s guaranteed to make you smile! And yes, the younger kid on the screen is really me. You can see the video at www.RichardBard.com. The link is also on my Authonomy profile page. Special offer for former Authonomy backers between now and the formal launch on Sept 1st: If you would like to receive a “Review” copy of the eBook (plus 2 FREE thrillers from the Kindle Top-20 PAID Bestseller list – yes, really), go to the website, click the “Contact” button, and leave a message that includes your Authonomy username and the secret code words “I Feel the Rush!” Details of this promo will be emailed to you. Thanks!

lemon meringue tarts? lemonade too cliche for me. half -full glass- how about one squeeze at a time?one piece of fruit?
also 'economic" not needed with recession.

I was caught up in the message you were delivering. Despite some needed editing (chapter 2 had a rough beginning sentence which could be better clarified), overall, after reading through chapter 6, I have found your premise and challenge to be much needed. I have backed your book. Please remember December Gold.

For more about ME, check out my blog & YouTube. :) http://teamapril.blogspot.com, http://www.youtube.com/aprilcapil.

I figured Lance Armstrong and Kris Carr had already covered the "Inspirational Cancer Survival Story" market, while the "How Do I Get Through This Depressing Period Of My Life" market was still tappable (kind of like the "How Do I Drop All This Extra Weight?" market, though, I guess!).

Can I say straight away I'm backing this book, because it is an inspiration written by a v grounded lady. However I had hoped to meet April in the book, OK only read 4 chapters, but the book reads like a script of someone on the lecturer trail....... did I get to know April.....not really and that's sad because I believe she's worth knowing..............I'll come back to this great book and look for her in the detail...meanwhile best of luck for your health for the future......

PS I'm @ stage 4 with cancer...... it's a bugga..... but I'm now considering writing a book called..Topic of Cancer....see your book is an inspiration!!

I expected this book to be a brave, true story about your recovery from cancer, which would have been good. Instead it is a reasoned, sensible, inspiring reaction to the varied troubles of life, and some excellent advice and help about how to approach them; and that's very good. The progression from 'People who drive SUVs are jerks,' to, 'People are jerks,' is very funny and also very true. That's certainly how our minds work, and the only person damaged, as you rightly say, is oneself. The 'Magic Pants,' giving ourselves permission to be happy with how we look in the pants which fit us today, and knowing we don't have to be younger or slimmer to be happy, is another true and important realisation. There's so much important stuff in this book. You write well, fluently, logically, amusingly. Backed.

Having just read the pitch and the first chapter, I humbly offer you the following which you are free to ignore :). Also, I will mention I have no MS on Authonomy for you to review, so you need not back me.

The long pitch is ok, as it did serve to draw me in to read more. However, I think if you take the last sentence beginning "Not a memoir,..." and make that your first sentence, it will more effectively foreground the act of storytelling and its universality in self-development. As it reads now, the details and specifics of your own heroic journey override the premise and the direction of the introductory chapter.

Just a thought for you to take or leave.

Stay strong!
And good luck on your Authonomy journey.

This is an important book. Should be recommended to anyone who's having a tough time in life (for all reasons, not just illness). Some people who write this type of book can't really write. You're the exception. You have a great writing style. Backed. Burgio (Grain of Salt).

I really liked this - plus I think it needs to be developed. I understand more than most the value of the slow blossoming of the idea you've taken - my wife died of cancer and I have written two books on the subject (see www.fightingcancer.com and www.cancerfighter.wordpress.com) but I have also had to help my profoundly handdicapped daughter (my own memoir is shortly to be published as Wordjazz for Stevie). This is just to let you know that I have walked a similar path to yours. The whole issue of decision making (and attitude orienting so that we can approach the decision making in the right frame of mind) is so important. Your approach of of slowly going over each step of the way works very well - but I think making the lemonade is only one small section of the whole journey and you should (probably already are?) work on these two. BTW what you have written was well written and was very approachable.

There's a lot of common wisdom and horse sense here. Like the parallel of the hunt, the police investigation and basing one's decisions on the evidence of what is working.

I backed your LEMONADE. It is a courageous undertaking and a difficult task to write about the life of a cancer survivor. My wife has survived too. I know I wish you many more years of good health.
I will appreciate a comment and backing of my book.
