The Cat in the Cradle

Jay Bell

Dueling mad magicians, battling possessed beasts, and surviving endless hostile landscapes? Easy. Loving someone you weren’t supposed to? That was hard.

A faceless killer terrorizes the Five Lands, one set on killing the ten Oligarchs, masters of elemental magic. It is from this murderer that Dylan, son of the Blue Oligarch, is forced to flee. Only Tyjinn, a brash and unpredictable bodyguard, stands between Dylan and certain death. Rather than play it safe, Tyjinn makes an unusual proposal; to hunt the hunter. This isn’t the only unorthodox idea he puts forth as an attraction blooms between the two young men. In the midst of uncountable obstacles and unforgiving odds, can Dylan really afford to recognize his own feelings?

Hi Jay, This is charming, the wise cat wanting Dylan to stay with his leisurely life and Dylan wanting to get beyond his father’s vision. It fairly flows along until the pheasants and the trade, Dylan not being a cat. It’s as if he knows he wants to find Rano but is happy to be wandering. The atmosphere and descriptions make for luminous reading! Shelved – Katherine (The Swan Bonnet)

Been on my shelf a fair few days...and now I've had opportunity to dip in. I backed because of title, cover and genre...and now I'm happy to report your writing stands up there along with those factors! Yes, backward is my way right now, internet issues and so forth, but in the end I am so pleased this graced my shelf. I'm not concerned with controversy or whether this is a fit or not for YA- I like it.

All the best further

Hi,
I read the first few chapters of your book and found it very interesting. Not something I would normally read but definitely sticks out in the YA genre... not sure there is much for the Gay market there now - probably something severly untapped. I wish you the very best of luck. I am happy to back it!

Very touching story, the kind of story that I would buy and give to friends and family
You have a gift, when it comes to connecting with the reader and building sympathy for the MC
The writing is good and the dialogue impressive
I wish the you best

Hi Jay, Cat in the Cradle is well written and entertaining. I'm sure it will soar to the top here. I think the gay angle will win you more readers because it's different. It opens a unique market.

This involves an extremely sensitive subject, one that if altered, might be less controversial and do well for a more general market...the writing itself is excellent and enjoyable. I love your cat.

This is a good read: a mysterious world loaded with hard to battle monsters . . . and on top of that a gay blossoming relationship. It might not be for everyone but if someone passes this by, they've missed a good read. Burgio (Grain of SAlt).

Jay, I've read all you've uploaded to the site with interest. The cover is very strong and the pitches cram in enough to set out the premise of the story, including some well-chosen names for this genre, and the added piquancy of a gay relationship. Just a small point, in the short pitch, I found the final section, 'That was hard' slightly awkward. Perhaps it would be better expressed in the present tense with the emphasis being 'that is much more difficult' A personal opinion, no more.
An effective hook at the end of the opening chapter reinforces the assured touch you display in progressing the story. There's some very effective imagery in your prose and your use of language is perfectly suited to the fantasy genre. I expect this to do very well, it deserves success. Backed.

This is a beautifully written book, full of poetry in your detailed and convincing descriptions. Dylan is a very realistically drawn boy, and Kio is an excellent and amusing character, sarcastic and enjoyable. It comes as a surprise when the cat starts to talk, and the fact that Dylan takes this for granted is even more surprising. Later we realise that we are moving in a magic kingdom, where 'blue magic' is used to see and to direct energy through crystal spheres. The use of the crystal to sail the boat is described with great skill, making this unusual idea come to life. Dylan's unresolved relationship with his childhood friend Rano is mentioned in a delicate, sensitive way which stirs our interest. You have demonstrated plenty of imagination and your writing skills are first rate. Backed.

A gay fantasy? That is an interesting angle that I never would have thought of. But with that said, you really need to work on these pitches. You can write but you need to work on these first as the casual reader will see this first before they open the pages. Very critical to get this right. SHELVING you for originality.

I can use your comments on my book when you get a chance. Cheers!

Hi Jay,

Your writing style feels very similar to mine, though I don't know whether you'll take that as a compliment or an insult! I've only read the first chapter so far but will certainly be back to read more when I have more time.

All the best,
MK.

What a descriptive start to this book - you could almost be there! Magic and crystals are guaranteed to keep me reading, but you created a nice 'hook' at the end of chapter one, which did the trick!

This will do very well IMO the market you are targeting is fickle but you have delivered the goods and then some. The cover is brilliant, you handle the 'Gay topic wonderfully well and with a fluid style that translates very well on the screen and will I think sell hugely .

A good read and a deft handling of what could be a tricky subject. Love the cat. Only niggle? For people of my age Dylan will always a hippy rabbit on the Magic Roundabout programme. Good luck with this. Jim Darcy The Firelord's crown

Great website, great cover, and a wonderful story. Can't beat that combination.

I think fantasy can be read at any age. I enjoyed this very much. I know Holly Black's YA novels often deal with serious issues including sexuality. I believe your book will do very well.
Thank you for the opportunity to read a portion of your book. Backed.
