The Telescope Adventures - Trebra

Christopher Dandy

Light-hearted sci-fi for children of all ages, The Telescope Adventures travel to fascinating planets, to take a wry look at things we take for granted.

Doctor Dell’s telescope is a remarkable machine which seems somehow to allow travel to distant planets. All you need, apparently, is an open mind. Tom and Alex are the brother and sister who are selected by the mysterious Dr Dell to make these journeys. Their first trip is to Trebra, where quite by chance they introduce the inhabitants to the idea of money, which has previously not been thought of on the planet. The story examines how this new concept affects the lives of the Trebrans, including the brash entrepreneur Bulstrobe, his vague and enormous wife, the timid police chief Inspector Trace and the fiercely independent builder, Mr Maroni. Various problems need to be solved in original ways, notably what to use as coinage, since there are no metals on Trebra, and how to keep money safe, which involves the introduction of banks. All this allows us to take a somewhat sideways look at various things which we take for granted in everyday life on Earth.

Future adventures will take Tom and Alex to Baftersak, which is an edible planet posing its own conservation problems, Betternim, where everyone is identical, obviating prejudice (one would imagine), and elsewhere.

Hi Christopher, just wondering if you have had the chance to take a look at Firelord yet? I'm especially hoping for some feedback on the later chapters. nb. chapter 34 is actually chapter 1 of book 2!
Thanks anyway, I enjoyed what I read of yours. :).

Esily translatable to a children's series tht will engage and entertain all ages. I love this, it's educational and funny without being in your face. Great stuff

Wonderful - this is a unique and enchanting premise, fairly unusual to find that in the genre as it is, and then you carry us on with a fantastic cast of characters. This is a breath of fresh and air, and a delightful read.

Bscked with pleasure

This is an excellent idea. I love the opening, very easy to follow and not just for children. It flows so well and I love the way the brother sister disagree on everything but the telescope, having two siblings myself I know what that's like. This was a joy to read, backed with pleasure.

Really entertaining, my children would have loved this and it would have been very popular when I worked in schools too. Well done. Paula Barrett (Cuthbert-how mean is my valley)

Chris: the short pitch TELLS us too much. The long pitch is too much for your YA audience. Break it up so it reads faster. Less is more in this regard. Perfecting your pitches is how you climb in ranking to gather more exposure and comments to better your novel. The writing is good so I am SHELVING you.

Though I have been a very active member for over a year, I can still use your comments on my book when you get the chance. Every little bit helps. Cheers!

This is a very good story with a pair of likable MC's in Alex and Tom. You do their sibling rivalry gently but with a barb and the adventure itself is very engaging. I like the telescope idea and the fact it takes them places. The economics of money are dealt with very well and, given that this is a topic schools now have to cover, I can see this being and excellent intro for teachers to use. Well done. This is a good children’s story. Alex and Tom are good main characters; they’re likable and have an air of excitement about them that makes their adventure fun to read. Introducing money to the planet seems like such a simple thing but how trade and the role of money works can be a puzzling concept for children so I think they’re enjoy reading about this ( in a sequel you could introduce credit cards and explore the effect of that). Altogether, the children, the plot, the strange planet – all come together to make this a good read. I’m adding this to my shelf. Burgio (Grain of Salt).
