The Langdale Inheritance

Torsten Payne

A ghost story in the style of M.R.James, guaranteed to make you check the windows and look under the bed.

M.R.James was the father of the modern ghost story, writing with an old fashioned but low key style where the chills come from plotting and atmosphere rather than gore and the occasional, well turned, sentence which makes you suddenly appreciate the full horror of a situation. Hopefully, this follows in his tradition. For full effect, read whilst alone, of an evening...

ARISE, AUTHONOMY GHOST!

Ease those weary, withered limbs from your coffin. Push away the stone from the mouth of the tomb.

You have one last task to perform. One last, sacred shelf to confer.

Whether you were plugger, spammer, gusher or troll, whether you flirted or fought in the forum or beavered away in the shadows, now is the time for your resurrection.

One last time. Marshall your strength, muster the last vestiges of your power and carry out your final Authonomy act:

Back my book, MIRROR IN THE SKY.

Then, only then, you may rest easy in your Authonomy grave.

It might help if it were justified but I found I got bogged down reading this. The first chapter set the scene nicely yet in the next chapter it goes onto try and add to this with no dialogue to break it up and added interest for the reader. Still the first chapter did create a good image in my head of a slightly run down old mansion with one wing lost to the wilderness.

Massive paragraphs were off putting. Commenting on your own book, as if you are someone else, is less than smart either.

I think it’s always a good idea to comment on other books, if you have the time, and load some books onto your shelf. Also, think about plugging your book on the forums. Good luck.

Now, this is VERY M.R.James.... Obviously you have slightly updated the setting, but the language ("nefarious" etc.) is hardly updated. Same with the issue of it being a stately home etc.

This is no bad thing if that's what you want to do - there are no obvious errors or any clumsiness, and it works very well as a period piece - but, surely the ghost story or whatever you want to call it has moved on since James? Are you going to post other stories - are they simiar or do you vary your style?

p.s. good postscript...!

The scariest thing I've ever read. I haven't slept for a week!
