Maybe weddings are more relaxed/raucous now - but many of these could be read at weddings. (Maybe not Married to the Mob!) The toilet seat one would be fine though perhaps you could say something like increase the size of the aperture (and sorry, I'm not about to come up with any ideas to make it fit the rhyme scheme, just thinking it suits the slightly coy tone). Anyway I think the publisher was right first, there could well be a market....

Great poems

JamesRevoir wrote 221 days ago

Hello David:

I really enjoy your whimsical wedding and marriage poetry! Perhaps the rhythm and meter isn't always up to the par of some reader's expectations, but what may be perceived as lacking in that area is more than made up in the true-to-live realities of marriage which you so amazingly express. I especially loved "The Bawdy Bunch" (Chapter 12).

The only suggestion is that the pitch be expanded beyond wedding poems to marriage in general. This is more of a marketing suggestion because it would attract a wider range of people to buy your book-not just those who are currently involved in weddings.

Before I looked at your name, I thought and assumed that the author was female. I mean this as a compliment, because you have the unique ability to view marriage in ways to which many men are inherently blind. What outstanding observations!

Keep the poetry flowing!

James

I think that this poetry is very funny and very true to life. I liked the use of the simple rhyme, this is often overlooked but is very effective at conveying meaning. The way you get to the point is also very funny. I have a similar sense of humour and if you have time you could look at 'Everyman's Poetry' I hope there's something for everyone in there. I am definitely going to read some more of this!

Best of Luck with the poetry

This is a good collections of poems and a fun read. My top tip for poetry (not that I am an expert in any way) is to think carefully about the pace/sound of the poem. How may syllables in each line is important. I am backing this though! Clare

Dear David Kidd,

I prowl about this site searching for light-hearted reads and that often leads me to the children’s section. I’m delighted to find Poems for Wedding Receptions. What a good and marketable idea. It has been my theory that many books are sold not to read but to give as gifts. Books make for easy presents (showers and bridal parties, anyone?), but this one the buyer might decide to keep for the smiles it’ll provide.

Best and backed.

as a poet i know how hard it can be to make a poem make sense for the reader and also put it in such a way that it gets to point and nt bore the reader, but to write them and make them funny is an art. I am oficially a fan and i take my hat off and bow before you. Well done.

Hi David, what a hoot! I just dipped in at random and laughed at random, too. Seriously, you must have put a huge amount of work into creating this superb anthology. Well done. Backed of course Gordon - The Harpist of Madrid

Here is your chance to get a double backing. My friend, homewriter, and I have similar taste in writing and trust each other's judgment. Back my book and leave it on your bookshelf. Then do the same for his, "The Harpist of Madrid." Once the backings register, he will give you a return backing guaranteed. Just let him know in an email that you've backed my book as well as his. You might have to be a bit patient as we're 6 time zones apart. But you'll have two backings guaranteed on your excellent book. Of course, comments are always welcome too!

Good concept. Some of the poems are good, but others are rough. It's worth polishing though.

Split personality was the cleverest of your poems for me. Slobbering Dog appealed. Others didn't work quite as well but overall they gave me pleasure. Backed, Regards, Anne

The best of these remind me strongly of the poems of Ogden Nash and Dorothy Parker, two of the wittiest people who ever inhabited our planet. Very enjoyable reading!

David,
Poems for wedding receptions
These are great fun. you must have had many a chuckle writing these. I know I did reading them.
I think my favorite is Bouquet Revenge. I do say this wife doth snore and she still does a lot of the chores.
And I am told I can really snore a tune.
this is very clever. Our poetry is very different but that is the great thing about poetry, it can be all things.
Njoyed

POEMS for...
Enjoyable collection of poems on a variety of mundane subjects. .Acting on the advice of both Mom and Dad, diametrically or proverbially opposite, a parent- abiding girl gets a groom of split personality! Simply beautiful.
For a poet, no subject is too trivial., they say. .As we see, even those who stand and pee also serve! Mirthful.
Backed.

I like to comment as I read, just my thoughts as if I was in a book shop. I don’t crit grammar or anything like that much. I will generally only make negative remarks if you have asked me to comment. Otherwise if I have commented it is because I think your book is great.

Poems for wedding receptions

Love your cover.

I love this idea and I should think that it could be a help for many best man or father of the bride. I did have a problem with one or two of your poems and the rhythm but all in all I think that this is a great idea and wish you well with it – backed – Diane

Vanessa Darnleigh wrote 603 days ago

Most of your poems run on smoothly but a few are a bit awkward since the rhyming pattern is irregular...anyway I doubt if that really matters when the guests are full of champagne! Wishing you all the best

David, friggin loved this all the poems, you should be writing for the population, be a millionaire, go for it . All those weddings, you would be made. This is a funny read with great elements in it,delightful. BACKED by me for lsure. BEST OF LUCK, not that you need it anyone reading has to back it, lets face it we have all been there and divorced.......My book is of a different genre but that is the beauty of this site, and if you could 'review' and 'comment' and BACK it, I would be so happy. Again BEST OF LUCK with your book

Dear David --

As promised a quick read, but even more delightful than we hoped. "The Bawdy Bunch" under the 12 heading is worth backing along, but near and dear to Bobbi's heart was the first poem about snoring. (Shh... don't tell her husband his nickname is sometimes Snorry McSnorer:)

Seriously, we would love to see this published; it makes a perfect shower gift and so much more.

Our pleasure to back Poems for Wedding Receptions... and thanks so much for the laughs! -- Delhui, The Long Black Veil

I am disapointed by the tales,
They show only female wales.
In my house the wife doth snore,
And I the man hath many chores.

"Split Personality" is absolutely genius. It truly shows how even the most relied on and classic of knowledge contradicts itself, even more so between the male and female perspectives. Great job on everything else too.

As a snorer (and with a long suffering girlfriend who has to put up with it), I found that poem extremely funny. Iread upto 'Deaf, Dumb and Blind Male'. These are quite excellent. Each contain a lovely rhythm, genuinely funny observations and clever word usage. Can't fault 'em, so won't. Well done, David.

Dear David, I love your delighful poems & humor :) - I hope you write many more books. :) Before I began to read your book, I was prepared by your pitch & Table of Contest which I enjoyed & laughed at out loud - very well done. :) (The toilet paper should not come from the top. :) Your book is good because you create interest by having short paragraphs, which makes me want to keep reading to find out what's going to happen next. I'm "backing" your book: When you back a book, it only improves the ranking of that book, not yours. However, the author whose book you are backing may decide to back your book also, in which case yes, your ranking would be improved...authonomy. :) Please "back" my TWO memoir books, "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not" & my completed memoir unedited version? "Tell Me True Love Stories," which tells at the end, my illness now & 6th abusive marriage." Thanks, Susie :)
p.s. Remember: Every time you place a book on your bookshelf, your recommendation pushes the book up the rankings. And while that book sits on your bookshelf, your reputation as a talent spotter increases depending on how well that book performs. :)

WEDDING RECEPTION POEMS
This is a funny, funny book. I have been at wedding receptions where a Best Man has stood overwhelmed with nothing to say; should have read this book (or maybe not; maybe the simple “I don’t know what to say” was better for his future relationship with the bride and groom than the one about the bride’s IQ test or the thought of choosing your in-laws first. A fun read, I’m adding this to my shelf. Burgio (Grain of Salt).

Most definatelly not your traditional, "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." But then again, we could use new things on a old theme. I'm getting tired of the traditional wedding stuff. That's why "The Wedding Singer" is one of my favourite movies. Backed!
