The Last Wolf and Other Scottish Tales

Mags Campbell

A lonely werewolf sits on a remote stone and a village appears in a glen once a year. Stories inspired by the myths of Scotland.

Scotland's rich history and beautifully evocative mythology inspire these diverse stories of a gentle werewolf, the ghosts of an industry almost dead, a village where time doesn't pass, a Highland mystery solved at last, brownies and fairies, old gods in the modern world, dancing vampires, a cannibal clan, giants who sleep a restless sleep...

This is wonderful. I was wondering how they'd market it - is it aimed at adults, or younger? I can see it for sale in Scotland, but I can't think of many people who wouldn't love the writing here. So very unusual, lyrical and haunting. I'd certainly buy this. It's not quite like anything else around. Really love it. Going to give you a mention on the forum, and a place on my shelf when I next change over.

Sorry it took so long to get to commenting after backing. Exactly my favorite kind of stories, I only wish there was more of Callum, he was my favorite. I adore the brownie and was happy to see him back in a second story (that included the Wild Hunt yet, one of my favorite stories). Love this, and if I saw it sitting on a shelf in a real bookstore I would snatch it up immediately. And I love the cover art.

This is a glorious (don’t know where that came from but it feels very apt) book.
First person doesn’t always do it for me but this book is brilliant and engaging. Within the first few paragraphs the whole thing was captivating. I’ve stopped at the dragon slayer but will be back – a great story – very well told!

This is just beautiful, beautiful writing. I drank in your stories like a long cold glass of water on a hot day. I'm not on here much and I don't gush much but truly I love what you're doing here. If Authonomy was how it was in days of old, I'd do a 'recommend read' thread for this on the forum but I fear there is no point now - as it's all just a case of 'back me, I'll back you and let's race to the desk as fast as we can'....but then, to be honest, I don't think you really need hard crit. I noticed one apostrophe out of place (and only because I am anally retentive on apostrophes) but really that was it. Your writing is so lean, so louche almost - it's effortless and enchants the reader with the greatest of ease. A lot of people here could learn a heck of a lot from reading your work.
I seriously hope you're agented and that your stories get published soon. Though, if I'm really honest, I'd love it even more if you wrote a full-length novel.
You are SO backed.

PS - forgot to say - it was your cover which enticed me in....love it.

Captivating, I liked your story. It seems like an old fashion werewolf story. I can't wait to read more.

The Last Wolf and Other Scottish Tales: Instead of re-vamping tales already told the author has created new stories, bite sized and very edible, and sprinkled them with hints of the old that gives them a strange authenticity.
The Last Wolf: A boy/young man, anxious to prove himself to family and perhaps himself, slays the last wolf despite a warning given by a mysterious old woman, of a curse that will lay on him until wolves return to the land once again. This lovely short story has been written along the lines of traditional stories but the author has given it a twist by bringing it into modern times. A sad tale of punishment and the longing for redemption.
Coming Home: A very short story with a brief, interesting history lesson concerning the ship building industry, packed with pathos.
What the Cat Dragged In: Again, the author has mingled ancient tales of the Seelie, UnSeelie Courts and the Wild Hunt, into our time with the introduction of a very feisty brownie who is so well up on the way we live today he orders her grocery online! A very nice touch.
Each of the stories read has something different to offer and the work produced is a tribute to the author's imagination.

A wonderful tale, steeped in history. I love the narrative and the way you drop the reader into your world.

One nitpick...from a simple reader's perspective. You should introduce dialogue sooner. In an age of internet attention spans many might skim, and miss your excellent prose! Enjoyed the read. Many stars!

Hi Mags
Some beautiful descriptive imagery. You really have a fell for how to tell a story. Really compelling and magical. Flows beautifully even without lots of dialogue. Really enjoyed it.

Dear Mags, I love your ending - grandpas last remark in his story - I'm so glad we really don't have werewolfs - it would cause great fear in livlihood. Your pitch was very well done - enough to set the hook for me to read your book. :) You created interest by having short paragraphs & lots of dialogue, which makes me want to keep reading to find out what's going to happen next. I'm "backing" your book. :) "When you back a book, it only improves the ranking of that book, not yours. However, the author whose book you are backing may decide to back your book also, in which case yes, your ranking would be improved"...authonomy quote. :) Please "back" my TWO memoir books, "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not" & my completed memoir unedited version? "Tell Me True Love Stories," which tells at the end, my illness now & 6th abusive marriage." Thanks, Susie :)
additional authonomy quote: "Every time you place a book on your bookshelf, your recommendation pushes the book up the rankings. And while that book sits on your bookshelf, your reputation as a talent spotter increases depending on how well that book performs." :)
backed :)
Love, Susie :)

This is beautiful, the idea of a lonely werewolf is evocative and the cover makes me want to cuddle him as I sit and listen to his tales. Well done for promoting Scotland, like Irish legends there isn't enough books out there to show our rich and diverse mythologies, a lot of which has inspired other writers across the world. There is enough history qnd atm osphere to fill a thousand books. get this out there on facebook, blogs, whatever you need to promote this. This is great.

The Last Wolf and other Scottish Tales

The Last Wolf. What an enchanting story. Told with polish and warmth. I think what really makes this is the switch from first to third person in the middle as Alex begins to tell us Callum’s story. The preceding first person opening makes this story so much more personal. This is going to do extremely well and I’m backing it 100%. . If you can find the time to take a look at Bokassa’s Last Apostle in return, I’d be extremely grateful.
