Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus

Daniel Kreller

A journal with reflections covering an Episcopal priest's 28 day sabbatical in the Holy Land

The journal was written during a 28 day period in January of 2008. I spent three weeks in Jerusalem and one week in the Galilee visiting the major sites of Jesus' life and ministry. I traveled alone, mostly on foot. Thus, the title of the Journal, "Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus." At each site I would sit and read the relevant texts pertaining to it from the Gospels. I was especially focused upon John's Gospel. At the end of each day I wrote a journal entry recounting what I had seen and my reflections. I visited the main museums in Jerusalem - the Shrine of the Book, the Bible Lands Museum, the Rockerfeller Museum, and Yad Vashem. For two days I toured with a group of scholars in town for a Symposium sponsored by Princeton Seminary, meeting such notables as Ehud Netzer at Herodian and Geza Vermes at Qumran. I also had dinner with an Orthodox Jewish family in a settlement in the Galilee, and a Palestinian Christian family in East Jerusalem. I also reflect in the Journal on the current political and religious realities in Israel.

Daniel, I like what you do here: tell us what you're seeing, then comment on how it relates to our life of faith. I stayed at St. Andrews Church of Scotland Guest House (I think it was called a Hospice when I was there in '82--I had the front room on the second floor, facing north toward the old city) and enjoyed a week of touring the city and the country--the experience of a lifetime. You help me relive these memories. I'm a Lutheran clergyperson--one of the first 50 women when I was ordained in 1978 (at the age of 50).

Thank you for sharing your faith. I try to do the same in my novel WAUCONDA. When we moved into my husband's first parish in Deronda, Wisconsin in 1951 I marveled at how a Christian core of the community kept a loving watch over the others. I knew that some day I'd write about the caring I found there, and this is it (it only took 60 years to gel!). When you have a few minutes could I ask you to take a look at WAUCONDA. I would value your suggestions and critique.

I'm putting your book on my bookshelf and giving it a bunch of stars.

A blessed Easter to you.

Thanks Daniel. I enjoy journals. While Israel is steeped in rituals, icons and elevated places (and thoughts), it was surely nice to be immersed in a culture who at least believe in God and His Son Jesus (I speak of the Messianic Jews here). One of the dreams I had was of being on a bus on a highway in the sky and the road curved to the right at the end as it went into a mountain and we were looking at the relics and icons (the crucifix, and many other things) and my sense was that all of these will go in the Kingdom; just as Hezekiah brought the Hebrews back to God's commandment, so will King Jesus. So many of the sites in Israel are like that; what will remain are the Lord's Feasts and God within us. Praise the Lord.

I read the first part of your book and the last part. Having been to Israel in 1996, I can identify with much of what you've said and I think that the Palestinians have been treated abominably. I hope this gets a wider audience. Bless you.

Daniel.
I read chs. 1,2, 5 and 8 of 'walking in footsteps'. I would say this has some excellent thought inpiring chapters. I always feel that the mainstream press ignore this type of thought provoking book. But you have expressed the ideas in a more open and everyday way we can all link with. Best of luck. Backed with sincerity.
You may appreciate my childrens book, written in the same vain, in the beleif that children don't want to be surrounded by the excesses of the modern world at the ages of 5 to 8. Interested in your views / critisisms or backing?

BACKED

Wayne Stiles wrote 644 days ago

The title of your book, "Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus," caught my eye because it's the same title as the book I wrote about MY travels to Israel.

God's blessings on your ministry, Daniel.

Hi Daniel. Nice, warm, real, still liking the journey you've painted. Good, consistent structure. Backed (I may have already, my profile has been acting up, and many have told me my backing hasn't registered!). Backing again just to be sure.

Many, many blessings
sincerely,

WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS
What a great way to spend a sabbatical. It obviously was a very meaningful journey for you and was wonderful of you to write such copious notes so readers can take this same journey with you. What makes this different (and better) from other journals is that you not only describe where you traveled each day but then end that day’s notes with your opinion on what the site means to today’s world. I’m happy to add this to my shelf. If you have a moment, would you look at mine (Grain of Salt)? I’m in 3rd place but only holding on by my teeth. Burgio

This is written in a very chilled, pilgrimage type way. i really enjoyed reading it and it made me think. I'm hoping to go there myself next year so it's all the more poignant. I've backed this and hope to come back to read more.

Fascinating, you have a travellers eye and a narrator's voice. Thank you for uploading this. I will come back until I have read the whole thing. Patrick Barrett (Cuthbert-how mean is my valley)

This is information from authonomy (so beware of any other untrue information you may receive that is spam & not quotes of authonomy):
"When you back a book, it only improves the ranking of that book, not yours. However, the author whose book you are backing may decide to back your book also, in which case yes, your ranking would be improved"
"Every time you place a book on your bookshelf, your recommendation pushes the book up the rankings. And while that book sits on your bookshelf, your reputation as a talent spotter increases depending on how well that book performs."
