Fishing in Beirut

Steven Callaghan

Set in contemporary Paris, Fishing in Beirut follows the lives of five very different characters. For details and ordering information, please see http://fishinginbeirut.com/

The story is set in Paris, beginning in late 2002. In the first section, we meet Frank, a 23 year old Irishman, Karen, a 26 year old blind woman from Chicago, and Johnny, a 32 year old street musician from Senegal. These characters do not know one another initially. Gradually connections between them emerge.

Aria, a 19 year old American girl, is introduced in the second section. She is taking a plane from San Jose to go and live in Paris.

The book goes on to detail the lives of these four characters in Paris, with earlier scenes also taking place in Berlin and Sevilla.

At the end of the second section, a would-be terrorist living in Beirut, Djinn, is brought into the story, who plans to bomb the Montparnasse tower in Paris.

The story is told in short, evocative scenes, favouring a technique of simply portraying the characters as they live their lives.
By the novel’s end, Djinn’s actions have changed Paris, echoing the changes in the lives of the characters.

You have written a very interesting and unique storyline and your character development of your main characters is excellent as is your use of imagery. The pace of your story flows well and all of this along with your descriptive writing makes your work a pleasure to read. Backed.

FISHING IN BEIRUT
This is a good story. I think the title is misleading; yes, there’s a terrorist form Beirut, but the beauty of the story is that it takes place in Paris – one of my favorite cities. You’ve created a good range of characters for this. Some readers will tell you that you have too many but beasue each one of them is unique and you introduce them individually, I don’t think that’s a problem. I’m happy to add it to my shelf. If you have a moment, would you look at mine (Grain of Salt)? I’m in 3rd place but only holding on by my teeth. Burgio

I Can also say that it was an interesting first chapter. As for the poem, I wouldn't understand it as I do not speak or read French. In fact I have never really been to france except passing through at the airport. I am sure the rest of the book is as interesting as the beginning. Only one thing, The first paragraph is a mouth full, but don't take my word for it as I am not an expert in these things.
Good luck with your book and I am very glad to back it.
Cheers,
Pamela 'The Outrage'

Dear Steven, I love the way you put me right there in your story to feel the way your characters are feeling. :) Your pitch drew me in to read about all of the people & places, since I've never been to Europe. Your tight paragraphs & dialogue kept me reading. :) I love that you put lyrics in, too. :) I've backed your book :) - hope you'll take a moment to back my 2 memoir books. :) Thanks so very much. :) Love, Susie :)

This is information from authonomy (so beware of any other untrue information you may receive that is spam & not quotes of authonomy):
"When you back a book, it only improves the ranking of that book, not yours. However, the author whose book you are backing may decide to back your book also, in which case yes, your ranking would be improved"
"Every time you place a book on your bookshelf, your recommendation pushes the book up the rankings. And while that book sits on your bookshelf, your reputation as a talent spotter increases depending on how well that book performs."

Interesting first chapter. Is the poem a Neruda? I lived in Paris for a while when i was a child, so always like books that are set there.

Hi Karien, thanks for your comment. The poem is from Garcia Lorca. The book will be available in paperback within the next couple of weeks. I must have a read of your stuff too. Steven - Fishing in Beirut
