The Bounteous Land

J. Moore

It was supposed to be a safe haven from outsiders, a paradise. But it's turning into a nightmare.

For centuries, the People of the Spider have preserved their culture. They are one with nature, friendly with their neighbors and protected from invaders. But when the shaman's son finds a gold coin in the river, he murders his father and seizes power over the People.

Life has never been easy for the People, but under the rule of the young shaman Paak, it becomes horrific. Paak orders all males to train as blood-thirsty warriors. He commands all females to become pregnant to stock the next generation of killers. He plots war against a neighboring tribe.

Joon is nearing the age of maturity. She fears her fate among the People, but has no intention of bending to Paak's new laws. While out on a gathering excursion, she is assaulted by a boy from her own tribe. In the events that follow, Joon is betrayed and banished.

Pursued by the vengeful shaman, Joon ventures out beyond the Great Maw, a series of towering monoliths. Guided by a spirit that has suddenly latched onto her, Joon discovers the shocking truth about her People and the Bounteous Land itself.

Oh my god! The whole time he was choking for breath earlier I thought that his son was just going to watch him die. But then he saved him and I was a little disappointed because that is an awesome death. Suffocating under a mask... ouch! My lungs hurt! And then the end of the chapter comes and he repositions the mask so that his father does suffocate!!! You are brilliant. You already know that I think so. Reading just one chapter of this just confirms what I already know to be true. You are an amazing writer.

Point taken. The eff-word in the opening chapter will be deleted. Originally there wasn't going to be any cussing in this book because of the time and people of the story, as you said. But by the end, you'll realize that you were wrong about the time and the people, and it'll all make sense. That's why I left the cussing in. The one in the beginning, though, may turn away readers before they're hooked, so I'll concede that point.
Thank you!
J. Moore

J. Moore, This is a good, engaging story. I like your descriptive writing. It underpins the happenings and fleshes it out.
Tiny disappointment: You use 'fuck' in chapter 1. For me, this jarred because I don't think it's appropriate for the time or people in your story. It's throw-away-modern and with your gift of writing it would be no trouble for you to find a more impressive and authentic outcry from the shaman's son.
Like I've said, this is a good story and I'm glad to back it. All the best.

Jay -

The Bounteous Land - Nor, the sham Shaman. Disillusionment is a powerful lesson :) I like this guy, why does he have to die. Of course the illusion of power lives on, his son likes the glitter. I like the writing. And from your tags, the story sets out to make a wide sweep. I supported your other book a while ago, and you may well have supported mine.

An entertaining read although I think the episode with father and son tends to go on a bit too long...you're an accomplished writer with a natural flow that many would envy...well done!

For science fiction I did not expect such literary fiction in the prose. You have a beautiful hand and use your language well to paint your descriptions which are both apposite and subtle.
