With each retreating wave

Isabella C Byrne

A glimpse of a historic way of life now gone forever. Although this is a fictional saga, the events and daily living experiences are fact.

Set in Orkney in the year 1900,when herring was the gold of the seas, and emmigration was encouraged, this story follows the fortunes of two women in love with the same man. Isa is barely sixteen and pregnant when her parents leave for Canada. She will join them some day - or will she?
On her new island home she faces the opposition of her mother-in-law and her husband's childhood sweetheart, Chrissie, discovers the true nature of the boy she loves, and forges a strong bond with an unlikely candidate.
A spurned Chrissie marries the violent Jack, and in a series of events, the two women's lives become interwoven.
Set against a background of grinding poverty and moments of wonder, of wild winter gales and soft summer sunsets, of love and passion, hate and deception, birth and death, Isa and Chrissie battle to fulfill their dreams, and simply to survive.

Not my type of read but definately well written.
I found the slang in the dialogue a bit difficult to follow but that is the fault of the reader not the prose.
Well done,

I can just hear the dialect in my head as i read. That's not easy to do. I'm liking this so far. I really feel transported to the time and place described.

Oh, I really like this. You have very ably captured the the time and place and I'm certain I could smell the fish at times!! I wish I had time to read more but the chance of that has 'faded like sea mists in the summer heat' as I'm off travelling tomorrow and no time :(
However, I feel sure this will do very well and am more than happy to back it.

Hey, sounds like Absolution (below) was having a bad day — and didn't read your pitch carefully. Yeah, her parents did leave her behind. Not ambiguous at all. You may not be in school, but you got a lecture anyway. I am curious to read more of your book. Interesting that we are both writing about the Scots of Orkney. Do you have connections to Scotland? I don't think I do — except that I live in Winnipeg, where a lot of them settled.

I agree with the comment below, all the same it's enjoyable to read, more a romance than a historical novel

I read straight through what you uploaded. The story is interesting and well written. The set up for future events is so nicely written.

I have thoroughly enjoyed what I've read of this book so far (I'm up to chapter 3). It's quite intriguing and captivating. I like your writing style and the way you visually capture the diction. I can make a short list of grammatical suggestions, if you'd like (not an overwhelming list, but here-and-there's and typos).
The summary makes me anxious to read the rest - sounds like it's going to be a very powerful story.
Proud to back this work,
CP

I can't really add any more to AB's comments below...you have quite a knack of creating just the right ambience for your tale and the characters that make it work...this should be a hit with readers of the genre
Best of luck

You have written a very interesting and unique storyline, which I do like, and created a most memorable main character in Isa. The dialogue is realistic and well written and the pace of your story flows well. All of this along with your descriptive writing makes your historical romance a pleasure to read. Backed.

I've always loved the ocean and enjoyed those scene with ships and steamers and all the dialogue that goes with it. I appreciated your ability to make me feel like I was experiencing life in those times. From the words you used to the characters and their concerns to even the warehouse.

Dear Isabella

Just loved your short and long pitch both really sell your book which they are meant too so CONGRATS, and love the way you write. Your ability with words to craft an orginal read is amazing. the characters have decided to take up permanent residence but i will insist they leave soom to go home. ha! I have to wonder on this site at the
creations that come from peoples heads and of course the immense talent of those like yourself to animate
such colorful characters. I truly wish I had half your talent.

Please take a moment to look, COMMENT which is important to me, and BACK my book. if not that is OK
also

The VERY best of luck to you

BACKED BY ME FOR SURE.

thanks to all you guys for your kind comments. I am taking everything on board, and I am tryijng to return the favour by reading at least some of all your work. If I've not got to you yet - I will. I'm still new to this site so it's going to take me a little time to find my way around.

You ran out of chapters on me... boo... Happy to back your novel. I so enjoyed reading what you've posted of your novel. My only real critique is that you should drop most of your adverbs. Oh and that you repeat the word heavy at least four times in the first chapter (mind you I'm not sure what words you can or should use to get rid of the repetition)...

Cheers and good luck with your novel, Jennifer - A MATTER OF CONSCIENCE-

To pack so much love, passion and intensity into a small island setting shows your abilities very clearly. No car chases or explosions, just pure writing skill, well done. Paula Barrett (Cuthbert-how mean is my valley)

Dear Isabella, I love your touching love triangle :) - it kinda reminds me of "Little House on the Prairie :) - one of my favorite stories. :) Your pitch set me out to read your story. :) What a good write! :) - with crisp paragraphs & dialogue for a smooth read. :) Hope you'll write a lot more stories. :) I've backed your book :) - could you please take a moment to back my memoir book? :) Thanks so very much. :) Love, Susie :)

"When herring was the gold of the seas" and a "bonny young lad" stared at her. "Isa and Chrissie battle to fulfill their dreams, and simply to su[r]vive." You should be a little careful with the spelling in your pitch. Apart from that, I think you have fascinating story. Isa, the boy, the potatoes and all the raging hormones wakes up any jaded reader. I'll be back to read more once I get some time. Backed for now.

Impressive. The history of the islands around the Orkneys and their rapid decline into abandonment has intrigued me for years. Whole communities disappeared from them in the space of decades and now they are standing empty. This book captures that way of life very well, beautifully depicted and exquisitely written. Historical fiction at its finest.

Backed with pleasure, best of luck.
