An Agent of the King

Nigel Slater

A new Napoleonic Wars hero to rival Sharpe! Archie Dexter, secret agent, hedonist and adventurer, fights the secret forces of Napoleon.

Archie Dexter is a modern man of his age, educated but a religious sceptic at times a dangerous hedonist, but a fierce patriot.

Dexter sails with Nelson and becomes trapped in Egypt as Napoleon's army invades. Here he plays a pivotal role in the Battle of the Nile. Wounded and captured he returns to an England threatened from a France grown ever stronger.

As a secret agent he works to combat Napoleon's spies who operate and plot with impunity across London.

As war looms and alliances are forged across Europe, with a small group of loyal colleagues Dexter travels to Spain on a mission that will offer Britain its best chance of resisting France's ambitions.

On the dangerous streets of London he will be called upon to risk everything he holds dear, failure will see the death of his closest friend and possibly the King.

This is a tale of adventure and daring set in this most turbulent of periods in European history. Mixing intrigue and danger with lustful pursuits, Archie moves through the highest and lowest elements of society to protect his country from the plots of Napoleon.

[Thank you for your kind comment. It is selling okay as an eBook at present. I am of the generation that does not need atomic explosions in the first paragraph but it is a common comment so perhaps a re-write one day.

The upload is short at present but I've read enough to see a lot of potential in this story. It is clearly in capable hands and both historians and readers who enjoy this genre, will find much to commend it.
Time has been spent on research and it shows plus your eye for detail creates authenticity both in narrative and dialogue. This is certainly a book worth watching to see how the story grows.
If I were to nit-pick, perhaps bringing action in to the opening paragraphs of the first chpt. would hold attention for those tempted to stray with almost continual narrative to wade through before anything happens. Just my thought of course, sent with respect.
Whatever, this deserves to perch on my shelf and I will star it on the way. Margaret.

This story is true to its genre, is loads of fun to read, and you have a most engaging writing style. Your descriptive passages are lovely, and Dexter's internal musings appropriate. In the first chapter, hardly any dialogue, with just a little actual action at the end, which made for rather slow pacing. I'll read further before rating. Cheers! -Liz (Meggie Blackthorn)

You certainly know your period and I like the way you have slotted your hero into the pages of history without a seam. To see the Battles of the Pyramids from a different pov was excellent...I hope you give The Battle of the Nile the same treatment, I can't imagine you left it out.
A good read, believable both for period and characters. I will star rate it and will try and give you some shelf space later in the month. Please don't hesitate to remind me.

Many thanks, Dexter will go on to play a small but pivitol role in the Battle of the Nile

Dear Nigel

Best action novel on the site and you should start this with the murderous attack in Alexandria. Demonstrate the MC's character immediately by his reactions to this. Also would not commence this with 'they were viciously attacked.' This sounds like a summary after the event. Let us know what the first thing that happened was - the emotional/physical reaction of Dexter is a key to the whole book. Your nautical research, period detail and dialogue are all very convincing. Flashman and Sharpe and the novels of O'Brien have been mentioned and I am sure Dexter owes something to them all but to me he has enough distinction of his own to stand out amongst this illustrious group of literary predecessors.

best wishes with this

brian

Great stuff, the battle of Trafalgar from another angle by a man who can transport us to the scene with incredibly descriptive passages, well done. Patrick Barrett ( Cuthbert-how mean is my valley)

Hi Nigel, I only had time to read your opening chapter but I was impressed and really enjoyed it. The tension (for me anyway) came from the idea of Bonaparte's ships heading across the Med and Nelson, finding Alexandria 'bereft' of Frenchies, heading off to re-supply in Naples. This is how it happened and there's a great sense of history her.
Archibald's thoughts fill us in a little on how Bonaparte plans to use eygpt as a stepping stone to India.
The description of poor Percy Farthing was well done.
Then, the night of 29 June 1798 and The Leander under a thin white moon -- excellent imagery.
The attack comes as a surprise (as attacks often do) and this is also exciting and well-written -- not too gory but a shot n the stomach is enough to make it real.
Very nice writing.backed with pleasure,

The same period as my work, so I was drawn instantly. It makes a nice change for the action to be set in Egypt (I read chapter 1). A couple of minor niggles - be wary of using too many !!!!! and stock phrases like 'blood curdling scream', as both tend to distract from the reading experience. Enjoyed and Backed with pleasure.

Many thanks. I have tried to write a "yarn" perhaps in the style of John Buchan but with a more adult twist. When I read thrillers in the 70s the hero was not a sexless perfect killing machine as they are in so many now. Dexter is a gentleman adventurer as many were at this time, willing to die for a prvieledged lazy King but also a gambler, womaniser and a bit of a rogue when no one was looking. Hence Dexter gambles and takes advantage of any pleasure coming

I actually got excited to read some of this, the title alone is very compeling for me. it's a good read, I was concerned that it would get "stale" for some reason but it didn't happen. granted, I did not read that much of it, but the tale unravels at a nice pace and the writing support it well.

Nigel -

The Agent of the King - Great, an eighteen-century intrigue. I admire writers who get into the nitty gritty of research, like an archeologist, but digging up manuscripts rather than artefacts, carefully assembling the recorded details. History comes to live with a character driven story. Dexter seems a remarkable man. Just a thought, since you put thriller as the first genre, readers might expect some instant action up front and then have the backstory fed in slowly.

Wonderful writing, in the Flashman style, with a good historical feel. Backed.

By the way, I noticed one typo:

'and at [there] own game in the desert . . .'

it should, of course, be THEIR own game.

You have written a very interesting and unique historical storyline, which I do like, and created a most memorable main character in Dexter. The dialogue is realistic and well written and the pace of your story flows well. All of this along with your descriptive writing makes your work a pleasure to read. Backed.

A very good pitch, which encouraged me to check out the book itself. Good, but watch out for too much embedded dialogue - ie, dialogue directly followed by description of the speaker's body language/mood. It's best to have short sections of plain dialogue betwen the prose, and let the words convey the speakers' mood.
You don't say if it's complete. If it is add that info to your profile, along with a total word count rounded up to the nearest 1000 words.
All the best,

Thank you. Hoping people may enjoy the taster enough to go for the whole thing. The opening is very much a scene and character setter

AN AGENT OF THE KING
Hi Nigel,
Indeed a rival to Sharpe. Historical fiction one of my favourite genre especially if well written and this is. Slick, great descriptive passages and some authentic nautical dialogue. The period seems well researched and the scene is set perfectly. Well rounded characters and a good steady pace with some exciting adventurous parts thrown in to make this a great read. Happily backed.

Competing Super Powers of their day and Dexter is caught in the struggle for supremacy. In historical hindsight, we know the result, but at the time, the conclusion appeared to be far from what was the result. Remember Beethoven and his early love for Napoleon and dream to bring down the monarchies and promote a new world for mankind. Just like the line from the Who: "and I'll get on my knees and pray, we won't get fooled again." Simply, you picked a good time period for a thriller with a historical twist: the time of Napoleon - superstar. I'll be back to read more when I get a little more time. Backed for now.

Dear Nigel, I love the way you put me right there with you in your story & to feel what Dexter was feeling :) - I love Dexter's determination & that he never gives up. :) Would that everyone had the stamina he has :) - what a wonderful world this would be. :) Your pitch was excellent, drawing me in to read & your action moved me right through your story. :) I've backed your book :) - could you please take a moment to back my memoir book? :) Thanks so very much. :) Love, Susie :)
