Retrospection

Greg Barone

7 Friends. 20 Years. One Murder.

A lot can transpire in 20 years. Success. Love. Betrayal. Murder. Seven exceptionally close friends find this out firsthand: On the night of their twentieth high school reunion, one of them, is murdered. All of them become suspects. Based on the premise of the short-lived TV series "Reunion", RETROSPECTION tells the tale of these friends - Brennan Paris, Jamie Lambert, Tanya Jones, Brittney Keller, Felipe Perez, and Todd Faustino - as they are forced to relive the years that shaped their lives; and of Detective Peter Monroe, who pursues the diverse and secretive group, piecing together their stories over the course of 20 years - beginning with their 1990 high school graduation and continuing through 2010 - in order to solve the case. Their story is unraveled year by year, chapter by chapter, bringing the truth closer to light.

I have to just say one thing...wow! This is an exciting and intriguing book. I couldn't help but want to keep reading and find out what was going on. You've brought together a wonderful group of characters, each one unique and engaging in their own right. Sometimes with these many characters, some get lost along the way but you've managed to know do that, so far at least. There are a lot of dynamics in here that make this a wonderful read!

Greg,
Retrospection has an enthralling plot filled with suspense. You have a colorful cast of characters in this riveting account. I love your paragraph headings indicating time settings to guide the reader through the narrative. Backed with pleasure.

You have written a very interesting and unique storyline, which I do like, and created a most memorable main cast of characters. I especially like Munroe. The dialogue is realistic and well written and the pace of your story flows well. All of this along with your descriptive writing makes your work a pleasure to read. Backed.

THis would make a great teledrama. The characters interact well with each other. Emotive, powerful writing, that captures the essence of the characters well. Backed. Eunice - The Temple Dancer.

Retrospection

Greg Barone

Every betrayal begins with trust. How true. To remedy that - we should trust no one! Interesting plot - although, I think a murder occurring in the midst of friends getting together is not all that original. Saw a similar thing happen I believe in an episode of Smallville, the movie Stag et cetera, but of course, yours contains some unique elements. Read pitches/prologue/HC ch one upload. Interesting conversations between the members of the group - for so many characters, you do a good job of making each seem individual. Seven friends - magnificent seven? You set the stage well and I look forward to reading more when I have time to leam about that mystery murder mentioned in your pitches. Looking forward to it.

Chapter 3 has been added to RETROSPECTION! Come see what happens to the group in 1992!

Greg,

The story seems quite good here, so what I want to focus on are the couple of things I wasn't sure about. As I started reading I thought that I was in for another over written book...filled with lyrical descriptions and fancy language. It did start that way a bit, but you quickly moved away from that...that's a good thing.

The other thing that got to me (and this is a personal thing) is the way you introduce your characters. Unless you are dumping info for effect, then allow the reader to learned about the character instead of having the details dumped in their lap. Again, there may be times when you want to do this, but I don't see it here.

Actually a pretty good read!

This is an interesting way to start a book, with complete ID's of the main characters. I am a little concerned that not much is left to the imagination of the reader. But I do not judge it till I've read more.

A cracking story which moves along at a good pace. Lots of show rather than letting the action get bogged down with too much tell. Great dialogue from some realistic characters, this should do well. Just one crit. I'm not sure I like the use of capitals when you introduce the characters at the beginning but that's just me, others may feel differently. It doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment.

Great intro for the flashback which follows. Well written and paced. Scene setting also above average. (First graph, chapter 1, last line, I think should be "on" not "one.) I plan to continue reading this.

Only had time for a few chapters. The pitch hooked me and the story grabbed me.
Your narration has the right blend of “tell” and “show.” The dialogue sounds real and moves the story along. Tension is present and the pace sustained. Good job.
One thing though…all the jumping back and forth in time. I can see that backstory is important but maybe you could condense it. Also, more internal dialogue could better define your characters.
Good story. I enjoy your voice and am backing it.
I will appreciate if you look at mine…comment and backing would be great too.

Thanks for the comments everyone, much appreciated! I have up to Chapter 10 (1999) finished, and I am currently proofreading/fixing up each one, and I will upload as I finish. One of the important things I hope is conveyed, is that with each chapter and year that passes, and as the characters grow older and their lives change, there is a great deal of character growth involved. They start out naive, in high school, with smaller problems, but that changes! The way they think, act, speak, and interact with each other will change. Stay tuned!

I enjoyed the characters and storyline, and could have read more, if I wasn't so swamped for time. It created strong visual images for me, taking me right back to high school, and I'm curious to find out more about the various inter-relationships within the group. Backed.

Thanks,

Natalie.

Dear Greg, I love how your pitch is all inclusive of your story :) - I immediately thought of the movie, "Charade," where everyone is at the funeral & one of them sticks a pin into the viewing body to make sure he's dead - it had Cary Grant & Audrey Hepburn. Crisp dialogue & paragraphs made for a smooth read. :) What a dynamic mysterious story!! :) I love detective stories, too, having read Nancy Drew in high school in the '50s. :) Hope you'll write a million of them. :) I've backed your book :) - could you please take just a moment to back my memoirs book? :) Thanks so very much. :) Love, Susie :)
