Trinity

Dan C. McKinnis

A trinity of short stories about failure to communicate. What Adam in "Every Atom Belonging" was working on while Chris was away...

Underliner: It's a rather uncomfortable session one day on Psych Ward Five West B, when a patient Davies turns the tables and begins to question to Dr. Idle's own sanity instead...

***

Lost Count: A pilot and co-pilot co-exist peacefully, stranded on an island for over three thousand days, when something goes awry...

***

Broken English: An American working in Spain struggles with the isolation born of living without the ability to find the right words...

Superb stories! Understated, urbanely witty, intelligent. My only complaint is that I'd love to read more than these three. I'll be backing this collection just as soon as one of the current denizens of my bookshelf escapes by knotting its bedsheets together.

I love the logic in the arguments and the simple dialogue. Haven't we all wondered about reality at some stage? And didn't my own grandmother say that the hospital walls vanished after dark and people on the other side examined her? Scary stuff. I have to hold on to my belief that everything is going ahead according to plan or I'll ...

Backed with pleasure.

Dan -

Trinity - I remember Every Atom Belonging. Your shorts have the same irony, which I much enjoy. The story 'Underliner' is delightful. I'm one of those who like to think the Diagnostic Manual was created by experts intoxicated by mass psychosis. I love the humour ... 'Well, God tells me what words to circle, somehow, and since the words are from God, they don't have a pattern.' ... or ... the computer has its own consciousness ... people are just Neanderthals with sports cars ... In the story 'Lost Count' ... the thought that they had lost count was too much for the pilot to handle ... Now, time meant nothing. And what an ending. A great take on our warped ways of inducing communication too late. 'Broken English is in the same vein. Loved how the MC's days were measured by feeding the cats below his appartment, and his musings ... God on the balcony, throwing down our daily bread ... ha, ha. The butterfly museum ... is that so? twenty-six species with perfectly articulated letters of the alphabet on their wings? I know a butterfly researcher from the National Trust, must ask him. And the ending of that last story, ah.

Best success with your inspired themes. Pia (Course of Mirrors)

Your writing is humorous, confident and appealing. A wonderful blend of the realistic and absurd. Backed.

I like the dry comment in these stories. They made me smile and nod wryly. I'm not sure how you could present them as a book, merely re- length.

Dan, just noticed that Susie Gulick said she had backed your book. As you can see, she has not done so. She obviously intended to. I suggest you send her a message pointing out her mistake.

Dear Dan, I love the pilots one best & the 3000 days & the hash totals on the cave wall & figuring out back to 2827 :) - I could help but laugh out loud & say, "2827," after saying, "3000" earlier. :) I'm still laughing. :) Great write!! :) Hope you'll write a lot of books. :) I've read, commented on, backed, & ****** 'd your book :) - could you please back & ****** my memoirs book? :) Thank you from the bottom of my heart. :) Love, Susie :)

Interesting stories, but there isn't enough here, in terms of volume, to make a complete book that could be considered for publication.
