Hezekiah

Ian Kammann

Hezekiah...an often quoted from, but fictional, book of the Bible.

"Turn your Bibles to Hezekiah, Chapter 3." ...it sounds right...but Hezekiah is not a book of the Bible.

This little book of Hezekiah contains a collection of verses that people think are in the Bible...but are not. The verses have been organised into chapters, with subtitles and notes...just like a Study Bible!

Now, when someone says "God helps those who help themselves." you can give them the reference - Hez 4:2. That is, of course, if you can remember the reference. As Hez 3:16 reminds us, "Some chapter and verse references are easier to remember than others."

The complete book, along with all the trimmings - Timeline, Illustrations, Concordance and, of course, the obligatory Maps - can be purchased from www.hezekiah.com.au

I'm assuming this book was originally found in a large urn in the Caves at the Red Sea, right?

Hezekiah's origins were discussed in the book itself, but the book's claims have recently been challenged by the most progressive of modern scholars.

I salute you for sharing a book of excitement

So very different and so creatively written. I wasn't sure about it, but while I read I found it interesting and comical.
Very well developed.
I like the way you pitched this too.
Grand work!

Ian,

Okay I have read some funny books on this site, but for this Christian, your book far out ranks them all. This is written with such brilliance. Every page contains at least ten chuckles. I read through chapter seven and didn’t want to quit but my husband said it’s time for the day to be done. Does it say anything in Hezekiah about women obeying their husbands?

Here are just a few of the hundreds of quips that kept me in stitches.

These people being unfamiliar with Isaiah 55:8, are convinced that if they (i) think it is in the Bible (ii) think it sounds like something the Bible would say; or (iii) think it ought to be in the Bible… then it must be in the Bible.

However, Christians should not boast of their cars, as demonstrated by Jesus, who did not speak of his own Accord. HeeHee HoHo HaHa

Children should sit between their parents in church… Parents should also give some of their loose change to their children for the offering. Why is the familiar so humorous?

The disciples game… We read in Acts 2:1 that the disciples were all in one Accord… see if you can get in an Accord snd try to beat the disciples record. Too funny!

And the along the way, you insert these little nuggets of truth. This is really a work of art:

Left long enough, the fence sitter would build a house on this wall, as did Rahab. (Josh 2:15) But we can learn that, just like Rahab, it is never too late to come down off the fence and choose a side.
But on the side of right everything is properly set, as it were, in concrete. And so our fence sitter, rushing to the right is broken. And so must everyone be who desires to be right…

Ian, I hope this is published soon. I know our youth pastor would get a kick out of this. It’s available on Amazon? Hmmm. This would be a great gift! Six stars!

Hello, I put your book on my watchlist to read. I had to. That was one of my Pastor's favorite jokes - "turn to the book of Hezekiah" and then he would smile as the newer congregants would be flipping pages trying to find it.
It sounds like a fun read. I just signed up and am having a good time searching around this site. Your book obviously caught my eye as I looked throught the Christian selections.
I upload a non-fiction, Christian true story account of my grandson's out of body experience of being taken to heaven titled "The Chair". I don't know if you would be interested in reading an account that is so hard to believe, as I perceive you to be an analytical Bible scholar with a sense of humor, but I would really appreciate your comments because of that.
Thanks and good luck (blessings) on your book.

I'm very impressed Ian. You've achieved so much since Murdoch University days and your sense of humour has only got better. Great stuff. Look for Jaensch on facebook.

This is a truly unique, creative idea! Having been to seminary, this smacks of countless commentaries through which I spent many hours poring until I felt like pulling my hair out!

What I really enjoyed the most was the vast treasure trove of scripture, quoted by many, which is not found in the Bible.

The sad thing is the way in which so many of these scriptures have led so many astray, wielded by Christians themselves.

This work is an implicit commentary which speaks on so many levels.

I have been searching for hours this evening, looking for something to back. Thank you for finally being an answer to my prayer!

Wonderful and abundant blessings to you!

Ian - Hats off to you with this very funny treatment of the "Pretty good book" A friend in my bible study group always tells about a joke he has played on people for years which references a verse from the Book of Hezekiah, so when I saw your title I had to read it! I was sure that his joke would be in there, but it wasn't. It goes something like: "A lie is an abomination to the Lord!... but a worthy friend in times of need!" Hez 3:28

I'm sure he'd love to see it in your book!

If you feel so inclined to check out my book "Is That you God?" I'd be honored. I look forward to more "lost" pieces from the Book of Hezekiah!

There are many books, sriptures and gospels not included in the Bible. Bible does mean 'a collection of books'. These sacred works should be referred to with joy, humour and enrichment of spirit. Your idea with Hezekiah does that with trumps. A great lighthearted read.
Backed with pleasure.

Praise God, Ian. Your book is funny, though I wondered if God had you write it to keep Hezekiah's name in our minds -- he was the one King who God used to find the first five books of Moses (as you know) and then to read them -- to the Hebrews -- thus they were then in sackcloth and ashes because they'd sinned in moving far away from God's commandment. Hezekiah then set about to do away with the high places, the priests, the idols as did his great great grandson Josiah (as you know). Just as God used Hezekiah to turn people back to God, so he may be using your book title to open ears because again, and through our Saviour Christ Jesus, people are turning to our Lord and God -- and Hezekiah was a type of that revelation for us. Initially, I thought you were being distracted away from the straight path, but I'm not to judge. Give glory to God and our Lord Jesus Christ for He will return soon. 'Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is One God, and we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, and all our soul and all our might, and to love our neighbor as ourself.'

An interesting idea you have here. I'd be interested in reading more once you have it completed. I think you could do a little more with the first chapter in the actual chapter 2. Maybe add more than just one page? It's off to a good start though! Pretty funny and intriguing. Although, I can see a lot of Atheists picking up this book as a mockery of the Bible. Maybe you could add a little message somewhere to surprise them ;). Maybe at the end of the book once they've finished reading it haha. Good idea so far!

Ian, I am delighted by Hezekiah. What a whimsical undertaking. It is amusing and fun to read, but it also shows your familiarity with the Bible. I am backing and awarding stars based on the small portion I have had time to read tonight. I, too, have published my book through Create Space and am on authonomy in hopes of gathering recognition. My experience with Create Space was just the best. I was more than pleased with the finished product. What about you? I wish you the very best with Hezekiah - it's a delightful book, and I wish I had thought of this.

Take out something from old and make them new. You have done this process in your novel, because some characters appeared in this novel in new forms. This will be more interesting for readers and urge by themselves not only to read but analyze.

Backed Hezekiah. We have heard most of this during our life time (all three of us live in the Bible Belt). Great idea for a book. Hope you will find time to read, comment, star, and shelf our book Dark Side.

That does it. You have gone too far now. I am going to have to take something else down off my shelf and put this book up.

Someone may ask, "Why putteth he down my well written book, and added this false and spurious script?"

Here's the scoop: I read the bible every night, a chapter to my wife as we go to sleep, and sometimes it just gets too ... I don't know what. But when that happens, I would love to have this book sitting there in the pile so that I could retrieve some gnostically insightful wit and thus end the day with a mind that knoweth something -- or thinketh that it knoweth something.

And so that I might enter each new dark night of my soul (for they are legion) at least with a face that smileth.

Ian, this is a very clever work! Matter of fact, I LOVE it, especially because I am on staff at a church. I could probably give you enough material for a sequel!! Keep writing, friend. If you get time, hop over to my page and check out my books, "Lives Behind the Badge" and "Elijah". Thanks!

God bless,

Your book appears to be a satire of the current Christian Church. Sorry, I did scan most of your book, but did you include the popular phrase I heard growing up: "Cleanliness is next to Godliness", which is found in the book of Hezediak. :-)

zenup wrote 546 days ago

Oh wow, hilarious! You'd have to add that Hezekiah can be found alphabetically straight after Habbakuk. I could suggest, in Ch 11 (Hez 7) that you add 'keep the faith' - all purpose, even includes sporting scenarios. I have to say, I squirm big time in Ch 3, because your (hilarious) rendition of 'restoreth' and 'felleth' = apocryphal (see Rev), because 'restoreth' is singular, eg He restoreth my soul, and 'felleth greatly' sounds like a test for lisping. But who can nitpit such a grand undertaking? I think the great Spike would have laughed. Backed with pleasure.
