Burning Away - A journey of enlightenment by bike from England to Georgia

Andy Welch

What happens when you quit your life and set off on a massive bike ride?

Back in 2007 I got dissatisfied with my life, so I decided to do something about it. I took my passion for cycling and combined it with travel, adventure and personal interest in philosophy. Two old friends are lucky to share a dream and a love for bikes and decide to set off on a massive adventure. I found myself asking the big questions about life and trying to make sense of myself and the world through the narrative of the journey. It was the beginning of a learning process of life, seeing through preconceptions and the media hype and getting back to real human contact and life lived as it should be. I learnt about accepting opportunities and meeting people and got an insight into everyday life of people in countries across Europe, Turkey and to the Caucasus. This is my first book and I'm looking for objective readers to give critical feedback.

Hi Andrew, I've enjoyed browsing through bits of your book - well done, both with the writing and with the cycling that led to it! You have some great anecdotes and reflections, so keep it up. I would suggest however that you think about some serious editing. I personally found it quite a struggle to get into it - the introduction and first couple of chapters just don't give enough to grip you. My feelings on reading travel books are that I don't want a blow-by-blow account of everything that happened both in the lead up and on the trip, rather to get snapshots of the ride, enough to give a thread, and to hang the accompanying reflections on, but not to bore your readers with unecessary detail.
If you get a chance, have a look at Two guys, three wheels and a dog, and let me know your thoughts (any critique welcomed).

Dear Andy, I love that your have shared your bicycle trip. :) I love that you listed your motives of having a passion for cycling, travel, adventure, & interest in philosophy & am glad your friend wanted to go, too, as your pitch portrayed. :) As I read your trip, I was glad that I wasn't along, because I love the comforts of home, so I'm proud of you that you enjoyed it & wanted to do the trip, & most of all that you wrote your book to share with the whole world. :) It would be interesting to see Anne Frank's house, though. :) I have read, commented on & will back your book when space opens on my bookshelf. :) I have also gold ******-rated your book :) - could you please ****** & back my memoirs/testimony book, in return? :) Thank you from the bottom of my heart. :) Love, Susie :) p.s. every ******-ing moves our books up authonomy's lists, as does backing-more-than-24-hours & the longer on our bookshelves, the more our books move up :) - click on author's name, scroll down their profile page & click on their book cover & title & their book will come up, then you can ****** & back the book :)
None of this comment is copy/pasted & is written arduously my best from my heart, as I'm sure your book is, too. :)

Andy,
I love this traveler's adventure and agree with your assessment of the news media. The world isn't nearly as frightening as the evening news makes it out to be. I wish I could have shared in your travels.
Rated with six stars.

This is a nice, light piece of writing for me to read at a lunchtime. I like your flow of writing, but think that you need to make the first chapter/ introduction more captivating. A bit more description could be used to let your talent shine through.
Other than that, enjoyed it.
On my watchlist for now
