These Chips Called Moiety

Renoir

"No man can climb out beyond the limitations of his own character." ~John Morley

1. Don't stand out too much.
2. Mind your own business.
3. Act like you don't give a shit...even if you do.
4. Leave your personal problems at home.
5. Don't care too much.
6. Don't become a teacher's pet.
7. Avoid eating in the bathroom by yourself. You get more credibility eating at a table by yourself.
8. Avoid bullies.
9. Learn the cliques fast, and learn which ones to stay away from.
10. And most importantly: TRUST NO ONE.

You are a wallflower. At seventeen, you have acknowledged that. In fact, your contradictory nature now despises and craves it. At this point in your life, you only want to find a place where you belong, and something you can call your own--something you can excel at. Caught between the past and the present, and trying not to get confused in the madness of it all, the topsy-turviness that unravels you, all you'd like is to move forward. Move forward and forget.

A visit from mother dearest was not in the plans. And neither was befriending Caden Peters...

Well I was a bit disappointed by 3 but 1 and 2 were thought provoking and quite enjoyable. Backed for novelty.

The static nature of the writing isn't usually what i would go for - certainly not my style - but I found myself surprisingly caught up in the story. I think the writing style suits the characters well and I can fully understand the awkwardness of being seventeen. I think this would be one of those books I pick up when I'm feeling a touch demonic and want to engross myself in something very raw and honest. It makes a nice change to have on my watchlist - you've won me over!

The title 'These Chips called Moiety' I think refers to the division of the human race into two genders and the lottery by which each one of us is either one of the other. The authors chosen name suggests a lover of sensual beauty like Renoir himself and the arresting style and assured prose is a captivating start to this novel?memoir? cri de coeur? From the 'ten commandments' of the prologue, the chapter titles, and the opening thoughts of narrator Anthony we sense that this author has a story to tell. A narrator with a fear of talking is certainly new to me but Anthony's internal monolgue is vivid and eloquent. Can these two chapters be developed into a lengthy work?I guess we'll have to wait and see. My only comments/observations are- was Mr Connors supervising the Art Class? His utterances were more phliosophy/humanities as he discussed gender. Also where does Jo come from and who is he exactly? Minor quibbles. Lots of stars from me.

Deemed inappropriate? Not for this American. Powerful stuff here. Do keep writing -- this type of novel is sorely needed.

I loved how raw and authentic the dialogue and characters are. Tell me more . . .

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

PLEASE ONLY READ THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS.

The rest are simply filler chapters. My deserted NANO project. Warning: this does contain GAY SEX, language, and other things deemed inappropriate by a majority of Americans.
