The Pembrokeshire Connection

Andrew Wood

Luke Barrington receives a mysterious phone call from someone claiming to be his mother.

He would have believed it was his mother too, as she sounded just like her. Only one problem.

Luke buried his mother five hours ago after she passed away last week.

Lee Prince is called in to investigate and so begins a journey that takes him to South Wales and into a complex family history that spans six decades.

Who was the mystery caller? That's the easy part...

The Pembrokeshire Connection is the first book in a series featuring Lee Prince, a gay ex-police officer now a private investigator.

Not exactly my kind of story but I read as much as I could handle. That said, it's written well, although I'm not certain the prologue is needed. I believe everything there could be incorporated into the body of the story itself. And the only "Spurs" team I know of is in San Antonio, TX, not somewhere across an ocean, I'm guessing the UK. Also, the first chapter seems unusually long. You've got several places where scenes or dialogue changes, with a change in font or spacing in between. This would be a natural place for a chapter break. Backing for writing strength, can't really judge the content but you show strong talent.

Chapter 1: 2nd paragraph, a comma before so?

I would omit the date at the end, keeping it timeless. I like the chatty nature of the narrator. It's informal, without sounding like rambling. We get to know him quickly through his first-person introduction.

Wow, what a way to start and end a read -- great sex.

Seriously, you have my attention. I like Lee; I'm rooting for him; I want to read more.

I have vague recollections of a few technically issues (probably punctuation), but I was so into the story I don't recall where they were, sorry. There was something about the timeline with regards to his relationship with Stuart that bothered me. Could be I just missed something. I will re-read and get back to you if it still bugs me.
