Deflection

Kirsty Crees

Nettle’s world is ruled by corrupt Mino Priests. All she desires is freedom from her wicked mother and her underhanded coven. The journey is dangerous…

Nettle is a Sorceron, who lives on Scarab Island. Her world is made up of many covens that sit under the rule of the corrupt, Mino Priests. Nettle leads a lonely life, bound to a spiteful mother, and a corrupt coven; she will do anything to escape her dark mapped out future.
One evening, Nettle’s mother murders her cat in a ruthless attempt to teach her daughter a lesson. This night Nettle vows to find a way out. In the Mino archives, she discovers the ancient deflection law. The law states that on their eighteenth birthday, a Sorceron can switch covens. Nettle decides it’s her opportunity to find freedom and seeks help from her friends in the Corydon Coven.
The Mino noticed Nettle’s strengths in Sorcery at a young age and have been cultivating her ever since. Not only is she a weapon for them, but she has knowledge which could bring down their institution. Her Mother and the Mino will do everything in their power to keep her in their coven. Nettle almost gives in, as the people she cares for are punished, but will friendship and magic break her free? Only time will tell.

Hi Kirsty,
The ideas that you have are original, and though it was awful, I kind of liked that Nettle's mother killed her cat. It showed her true character really well, and it's not really something you would expect to read.
My criticism is a simple one, I would have liked more detail of her actual break in into the mino temple, but perhaps that's just me.
i wish you the best of luck with this.

Kirsty,
Deflection has many characteristics which appeal to readers of the fantasy genre. A profoundly imaginative storyline and a protagonist of strong character combine to create an enthralling journey to another world.

Excellent fantasy as the reader is forced directly into a world of magic and darkness. The main character is strong and resilient as she takes on her mother and the Mino. As a reader I am forced to hate her mother from the beginning of the story and begin to care for Nettle as she fights back.
BACKED!!

As I looked through the pitch to ‘Deflection’ I knew I was about to read something unique. Covens, Sorceron, deflection law—your imagination is rich. Your manner of writing appeals to me. I especially like the way you described the conflict between Nettle [by the way, an unusual name] and her mother. I surely feel sorry for Poppy. No wonder Nettle seeks to find a way to escape her mother.

I like the term ‘Sorceron’ – it is a great invention of yours. Your sentences are well-structured and pretty clean – in fact, your book is a pleasure to read. Full marks, without a doubt! Well done, Kirsty. You’ve done a great job here.

Kindest regards,
Ivan Amberlake
