The long term future and humankind's place in it. Generation one: the next hundred years. Generation two: the next thousand. Etc. Scientifically grounded, topically diverse.
What will we and our universe see in 100 years? Or 100 million years, or more? I discuss a range of topics and time scales. Here are some examples. Robotics and solar cells may turn our brittle, centralized society into a highly decentralized and resilient one. Artificial intelligence could threaten civilization as we know it. Genetic engineering could make amazing things grow on trees - literally. We've come a long way over the past 10 million years...and we'll be a lot different in another 10 million (if our funny-looking future descendants are still around). Global warming could create a real stink: poisonous, odoriferous hydrogen sulfide welling up into the oceans and into the atmosphere, possibly ending many species and even ourselves.
You've heard that an asteroid could strike, but did you know the entire universe as we know it could end within the next 137 1/2 years? You'll get a more sober assessment of the possible coming singularity than you'd get from some of the more wild-eyed singularitarians. Did you know evolution is producing new and interesting life forms at a faster and faster rate? Why wait for "wikiwikiwikipedia" to be created - you can read it here first!
