A Case of You

Ger Gallagher

A modern day version of Jane Eyre. Romantic fiction.

After discovering the extent of her fiancées drug addiction, Cathy Shannon calls off her wedding. Feeling lost and depressed she decides to visit her friend Orla in Toronto. Cathy resigns herself to being single again and as the weeks pass by she realises that she has nothing to return to. After a chance meeting with the owner of a nanny agency, Cathy accepts a job in Bronte with the Richards family. Mike Richards is a renowned architect who lives with his two children, Amy 9 and Josh 15. His wife, Christine is bi-polar and has left them to set up home in California with her healer boyfriend. Cathy immediately forms a bond with Amy who is floundering both at home and at school after the departure of her mother. Josh resents Cathy and pushes her patience to the limit whenever Mike is out of town. Sharon, a family friend is also put out at the new nanny’s arrival and becomes hostile when she learns of Mike’s feelings for Cathy. Cathy and Mike fall in love but chaos ensues when Christine arrives home and wants her family back. Domestic strife and visa complications threaten to shatter Cathy’s newfound happiness.

I was very taken with this, read it almost all the way through in one sitting. Cathy is a realistic character and easy to like, plus her relationship to the kids is very well portrayed. I have to be horrible, really horrible here, and say I'm so glad Christine died. I know that's horrible, but i was planning my comment in a brief break while reading the end and thinking 'i have to say that i wished she'd died'. But, the only thing I'd say and this is purely my wishful thinking, is that she started the fire, or at least a hint at it. Josh doesn't deserve that on his head for the rest of his life!

In true Authonomy spirit, I have a story of my own uploaded. It's only the first three chapters but I'm not so bothered with backing (although it's always nice), however I would appreciate if people can have a quick read and leave comments and critiques so I can improve it.

Congrats on the story, I'm hoping it will go far.
