Carlos Gesualdo: The Prince of Pain

Andrew Jackson

Carlos Gesualdo was a 16th Century Italian prince who murdered his child, wife and her lover. His life and music inspired Shakespear, Wagner and Debussy.

Carlos Gesualdo was obsessed with writing madrigals. His music was centuries ahead of its time. He was also a paranoid and jealous husband. He caught his wife in bed with another man so he stabbed them, shot them, and hung their bodies in the courtyard. He rocked his baby to death on cords of silk. He then escaped to a castle and chopped down all the trees so that he could see if anyone was coming for him (as did Macbeth, which was written 10 years later).

His music inspired Wagner, and Debussy labelled him "the crank of chromatism".

The first play I've looked at on Authonomy - and I liked it. I'm no playwrite myself so i'm afraid my comments would be a waste. I thought the dialogue was well thought out and you built a picture in my head - so on a stage i'd guess it would be even better. The historical referencing proves how much work and thought you've put into this. I wish you every success, i think the play deserves it.

ARISE, AUTHONOMY GHOST!

Ease those weary, withered limbs from your coffin. Push away the stone from the mouth of the tomb.

You have one last task to perform. One last, sacred shelf to confer.

Whether you were plugger, spammer, gusher or troll, whether you flirted or fought in the forum or beavered away in the shadows, now is the time for your resurrection.

One last time. Marshall your strength, muster the last vestiges of your power and carry out your final Authonomy act:

Back my book, MIRROR IN THE SKY.

Then, only then, you may rest easy in your Authonomy grave.

Andrew,

A bit of a chat follows.

Frederico says to Carlos: "Power, image, sex can be used, unless out of control. Out of control. More than any, lust destroyed your family, ruined your life and was abated only with music."

My sense of Carlos is that like all else, he used his music and artistic obsession to help satisfy his dominant need of sadism rather than to abate it, with his masochistic displays of penitence the opposite side of a single coin. Leonora suggests the same when she says, "You lusted for power and control" then assists him in his final masochistic act.

***

I enjoyed this read very much. I happen to have a background in music and share your fondness for madrigals, though your historical knowledge exceeds mine by far. Thanks for sharing this play, Andrew.

Cindy
