The Promise recounts two stories that appear to have nothing in common. The first is set in the eighteenth century, and the second toward the end of the twentieth century.
In one of the tales, a couple madly in love is about to get married when tragedy ensues, thus abruptly and brutally putting an end to their love story before the main characters were able to experience it fully. They make a promise to find each other again and to begin their romance where they left off.
In the other tale, two young teenagers fall in love at first sight. They have never seen each other before, and yet they seem to know all there is to know about each other. Their impossible love story will send them down different paths.
