SWIMMER

Brett Reetz

Paths of a washed up detective and a deaf child cross when a series of bizarre murders occur in the waters off Fish Creek, Wisconsin.

Lloyd Jornt, a washed up Chicago detective, receives a second chance in life when he is recruited to assist in the investigation of a series of bizarre murders occuring in the waters off Fish Creek, Wisconsin. The murders have no nexus other than their watery location. While studying the night with his telescope, Todd Grafton, a thirteen year old deaf boy, discovers the swimming man. Unaware of the Swimming man's evil ways, Todd believes him to be a super hero and decides to become a night swimmer himself. The ambitions of Lloyd Jornt, Todd Grafton and the swimming man collide in a battle between good and an ancient evil residing beneath a mysterious island.

Swimmer, a curt but somehow evocative title, has sharply defined imagery and caustic phraseology that provides an energetic and purposeful ambience. The reader knows instinctively that this plot is going somewhere and it will not be a boring ride. When one of the characters has an opinion about bowling I felt an immediate rapport as it matches my opinion about old guys playing golf. An intricate, finely developed plot with class and superb prose which tells it exactly the way I want to hear it. BACKED. Robert Davidson. The Tuzla Run.

Engaging storytelling that seems to be a murder mystery but in reality is a story of redemption. Captures the nuances of living "out loud" in a small community. Good dialog, transitions and depth of characters. I want more!

First up, backed.

Second, I'd back it again, if I could.

This is going on my shelf, and I'll be back for more. You've got a great, easy style, which reminds me in some ways of Lee Child, no nonsense, lyrical without being fancy, and snappy.

I can't wait to read more.

Wow - What a great book. Really great characters. Once you start reading you won't be able to put it down.

Hello there, have had a read at chapter one. I like the conversational tone; the bowling alley girlfriend anecdote, the savage ironies. The tip-click domino effect theory was a good one, too, and well-rendered. Sorry I can't stay for longer, watchlist is brutal at the moment. Happy to shelve

I wish I could finish it all now! The writing makes me feel like I'm there and it's easy to identify with the characters. You'll be hoping for a sequel.

From the first chapter to the last, the suspense was powerful. Not sure if I will step into a lake ever again though. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop.

I really love this book! Watch out Steven King, there's a new boy in town!

Terrific read. Interesting characters. I really cared about Lloyd and Todd...and want to see their relationship mature in the future! Haven't been afraid to get in the water since Jaws...and this is creepier. Make sure you have plenty of time when you start...you won't want to put it down. This is a great summer read and all the more fun when you recognize the setting.

Make sure you have a few hours to spend when you start reading this book because you will be completely drawn in by the end of the first chapter and will not want to stop. This is contemporary horror at its best. I cannot wait to be able to buy this book. I want to read more by this author and so will you.

Set aside a few hours when you decide to read this book since the story will not allow you to put the book down once you start. Exciting from start to finish.

This book is completely gripping. From the beginning to the end, it is a true thriller. I can totally see this as a movie! With its many points of view and storylines that begin separately but collide in the ending chapters, this is a read you cannot put down. It is scary, it is surprising, and I will never step into a lake again without thinking about the Swimming Man. Great combination of goosebumps, fear and horror, in a good way!!
