Cherry Picks

Debbie Bennett

Some of my published short stories.

1 Daughter of Lir. A love story that defies the ancient Celtic Gods.
2 Masquerade. In a post-apocalyptic world, are ethics more important than survival?
3 The Dreamseller. What if your dreams came true?
4 Carousel. Ray Bradbury’s fairground has nothing on this one. It’s the ride of your life.
5 Beyond Rescue. Can true love survive death?
6 The Fourth Dimension. Where the things down the back of your sofa cushions really come from.
7 Sarah. Can you ever get over the death of a child?
8 Maniac. He’s escaped from prison, but where is he heading?
9 20-20 Vision. A chance for a new start in life - or is it?
10 Lacuna. A trip to Hell - but love really can conquer all.
11 Hunt. Joe will need more than luck to survive when the Hounds of Hell are after him on Beltain eve.

Previously published fantasy, sf and horror short (and not so short) stories, some of which have won prizes. One was 'highly commended' by the American Goddess of fantasy fiction Ellen Datlow.

I read Masquerade and think it has a cracking premise (is he being protected or kept prisoner), but the prose could be tightened it considerably. For example a lot of the writing in italics, embellishes a little too much (his dream is not needed). The sense of confusion and foreboding needs to be brought to the fore, and every word and sentence that is not advancing the plot needs to be cut. Jake

Daughter of Lir is simply beautiful...There is passion in it. You describe your scenes so well that I could picture it in my mine; the wind...the sea...the superstitious sailors and Aisling...

Backed with pleasure.

Hi Debbie, I went and read some of your Cherry Pick stories, in fact I read all the odd number ones.
I liked all of them, but the two that stood out for me were the dreamseller and the population control one.
Creepy for the first, who the hell hasn't dreamed of being revenged on some bastard and, omg scary for the other. That one has just enough possibilities bedded in it to be comfortable.
All in all, its a lovely collection.

Hi, Debbie,

It's a shame nobody finds this. I see these have been published - deservedly so. I've only read Masquerade so far, but I'm backing this, and I'll come back and read another or two when I've got the chance.

I thought the story was great - I think shorts are sometimes in two camps - pure shorts, and shorts that are masquerading (ho ho) as a novel. This could easily be a novel. Leaves me wanting more. Very good.

Craig.
