Some Urban Fantasy novels from this site? I'd like to read more submissions in my genre, and most fantasy is simply NOT my cup of tea. Also, any stories here with gritty main characters anyone wants to recommend? I like those too. Yes, you can recommend your own book to me here, if you want If pitching me your own book, try your short pitch on me or the first paragraph of your novel. Maybe that will suck me in Posted: 02/09/2010 00:05:05

Extract - Chapter 15 Billy desperately scanned the vacant faces that were uniformly laid out before him, to ascertain the source of the mockery that had ridiculed him seconds before in his time of need. The open stares that met him with their greetings of morbidity and fear exaggerated the anxiety that had already taken its hold within. He looked carefully into the gazes of desperation that met him from the rows of seated sickness and dismay waiting eagerly for their final verdict. The cancer patient, he saw no hope for as she waited patiently with only death in her eyes. The poor man with constant indigestion would be surprised with his own death later that day whilst walking wearily to the pharmacy to collect the medication prescribed to ease the flatulent induced pains that he suffered; the doctor would miss out on his diagnosis that he had examined a dying heart. The teenage girl that sat quietly ushering her own muted giggles as she eagerly read the latest gossip from the glossy magazine resting upon her lap. The once-proud mother beside her now sat solemn faced, embarrassed for anyone to know the reasons behind their visit to the medical centre. Death itself would be the unborn child’s name as the stroke of a pen would condemn the growing foetus to the death penalty, never to know life. Billy only saw the misery and pain that was to fall on those around him as he looked deeply into the eyes of failed hope and despair. Posted: 02/09/2010 00:08:46

How bout this Ipaint? Its my stuff...not fantasy though, but I can say I've been surprised by reading stuff out of my genre. “You are to seek out the temple of the Hindu abomination called Sita, located somewhere on the Coleroon river, and you are to search carefully for an object of great importance on or near the idol.” The instructions ran through Jacob’s mind as they had a hundred times before. He looked down at the bag sitting between his outstretched legs, the drawstring stretched fully open. The hardened bread had disappeared two days ago, but the corners of the bag still had crumbs of cheese and bread, together with lint and the brown dust that seemed to impregnate all the nooks and crannies in the fleshly folds of any traveller walking these roads. He stared at the mixture for a long while, but finally turned to the single onion, a lone refugee fallen from some cart and abandoned on the side of the dusty road. He concentrated on the little onion for quite a some time before raising his head again. ‘If I just had a carrot to go with this onion, I could have carrot and onion soup. And if I had found a potato too...’ Posted: 02/09/2010 00:55:02

snave--haven't I already read for you :P tinman--definitely don't want FANTASY. Only urban fantasy. I am not a fan of sword fighting and knights and castles and goblins and elves and alternate universes lol. What you posted looks interesting. I am all for reading outside my genre. I do a lot of that. I pretty much like any fiction that ISN'T fantasy or sci fi. (but I like urban fantasy), but I am hoping to trade reads with people who do like urban fantasy. I've watchlisted yours--why did I think I had read your novel before? LOL. Did I owe you a read and never return it? If so, I'm righting that this week Posted: 02/09/2010 01:59:33

just punch 'urban fantasy' into the search box, Becca. You'll hit on whatever you're looking for there. Posted: 02/09/2010 02:04:27
Thanks, Gerry. That helped me find 3 books I haven't already read that are actual urban fantasy. I guess a lot of people aren't using that tag here. Posted: 02/09/2010 02:16:53

Bit hesitant to recommend my own book, but it's urban fantasy. Here's an extract from the prologue. He was going to die Jeremiah - knew it with rock solid certainty. In the past he always managed to evade them, tonight it seemed his luck had run out. A full moon hung in the sky above the city, its pock-marked face occasionally obscured by tattered rain clouds. On the flat rooftop of an abandoned warehouse, Jeremiah paused, his tall slender figure hunched over panting for breath. His damp hair hung in tangles over his face and his heart pounded in his chest. ‘There he is!’ Jeremiah cast a look over his shoulder. There were five of them, all intent on his destruction. With a strangled sob he fled. They’d pursued him through the dark narrow streets with relentless determination. In desperation he’d climbed up to the roof of the warehouse, hoping to lose them. He must escape. If they caught him… He stumbled towards the edge, praying there would be an easy way down, and came to a halt just short of the periphery. The ground, some fifty feet below, seemed to rush towards him and he lurched back, fighting a sudden onslaught of vertigo. No use calling for help. Even if he’d been able to, no one would answer. : http://www.authonomy.com/writing-community/profile/me/ Posted: 02/09/2010 20:26:26Last Edit: 02/09/2010 20:37:48 by Katrina Anne Jack
