Did I make a mistake?

I rewrote my book Walker, taking into account the advice given in my HC review. But I decided not to give it to my agent to submit in the usual way but to publish it myself as an e-book. Was that a mistake?

As it has a strong eco-theme there was something quite appealing about publishing it without killing any trees. Smile

You can read some of it here: http://www.authonomy.com/books/38772/walker-/

And, if you like it...you can buy it on Amazon.co.uk here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006J74FX6/ref=s9_simh_gw_p351_d1_g351_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=19T4TBNX192KV9MC63MJ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128533&pf_rd_i=468294

Or on Amazon.com here: http://www.amazon.com/Walker-ebook/dp/B006J74FX6/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_t_1

Actually the book is only out there cos of Kim Jewell who pushed me into doing it (and who edited and formatted it). And the cover is by our own Bradley Wind. Thank you Bradley.

The ludicrously successful self-publisher, Jake Barton, condescended to write a post on how to do it properly (ho ho) on my blog:

Oh, and by the way... Kim's own fabulous YA books are self-published and available to buy: Smile

Damnit, the link to her page isn't working - start here....

WTF? D'uh, yes. You've also given your agent the message they can go f**k themselves because you know better about the industry.

Nah, not really. Smile I talked to her about it and she said that, given the state of publishing right now, I may as well put it out there to gauge the market. It could still be published in the 'usual fashion' if required later on.

Hi, Jane. I'm clueless when it comes to promoting my e-books but I don't think it can ever be a mistake to publish that way. Perhaps I'm being a bit churlish but I do think that e-books seem to be "of a type". But if you can manage to rattle off popular stories in fairly short order and put them up there as cheaply as possible, it appears you can be successful. However, I have long ago despaired of finding the name "Russell Cruse" and the word "popular" in the same sentence! Good luck!
