Thumbs up/down for comments

I was thinking it would be good if we had the option to give the thumbs up/down for comments on other people's books. Because sometimes I see comments that should really be listened to (seeing a certain comment get lots of thumbs up might lend it more weight for the author) and often I see comments giving advice that just goes against what I know works for published books, and I feel like people should ignore that advice. But coming out and saying "That's wrong" in a comment of your own is a bit too confrontational for me and anyway I don't feel that we should start up debates on what advice is right or wrong in someone's comments. Some sort of rating system seems like a far neater way of doing things.

Useless if it's anonymous like the stars, as get on anyone's nerves and you'll received a barrage of thumbs down.

Needs to be traceable to the user...

Unfortunately there are some on here now who do not want to improve their writing skills. They only want to reach the haven of the ed's desk. So whatever you do, no advice will be taken.

Great idea Smile But does it open the door for more games? If it was anonymous and someone didn't like you they'd thumb down all your comments etc.

Yeah I'll admit there are quite a few flaws. I just feel there's a real issue here with more impressionable authors who feel unsure of their own knowledge, not knowing what advice to follow when they're told contradictory things. Or maybe there should be a way to comment on comments. That would just seem a bit less like you were trying to start an argument, in my view, if there was an official way to do it.

I agree - when you first join it can be very confusing when you receive contradictory comments. But you have to remember that any comment is just someone else’s opinion. There is no right or wrong, just different outlooks. People are bound to disagree from time to time, but it's only the minority that will see creative difference as an argument (I hope).

My maxim is where writing books is concerned is go with what you feel, in other words, decide from any advice you get, decide which best answers your problem. Everyone has their own voice for writing or should do. Of course you can take inspiration from other books you have read in the past, you read something as I did recently in Forest of Souls and the idea you have been searching for is embedded for I would at one point like to write another detective novel, using my current one to write one on the massacre of Oradour when I have finished the existing one. I also consult Ideas4writers. The key object is be observant, carry a notebook with you, reporter style is best but use whatever you have at hand in your handbag if you are a lady. It is all a question of taste in the sense of your own comfort zone then work on from there. Also read, read and read some more as that stimulates the thought process and you can observe how other writers use elements such as climate, atmosphere. I use the old version of New Novelist or Write It Now on the whole but use what appeals to you. Remember your novel is 'your baby' so nurture it, whatever it is. Set up a project file, put maps, printed character sketches, synopsis, however temporary. Most important of all, enjoy the process, otherwise, there is no point in doing it. It will be hard work but it won't feel like it if you get going.Smile Smile

Great idea? Email or tweet Authonomy - they don't tend to read forum posts much.

We don't really need more buttons. We have enough. Just be open, if you see a comment that agrees with what you think, do as others do and say ... I agree with so and so... simples. oh, and say why.Wink
