Agent arrogance

Hello All!

I was looking somewhere the other day... ok it was on Twitter, and I saw this agent (who shall remain nameless) saying, that they'd had a submission, and because the author had followed up after having their out of office message, they were going to reject them.

It really, really annoyed me!

a) Why tweet about it?

b) What if their book was fantastic?

c) We all make mistakes.

I really wanted to tweet back and say, 'you arrogant fuck!'.

Has anyone else seen/experienced anything like this?

P.S. I know there's nice and horrid people everywhere, and I'm normally on the side of publishing people. I don't think this idiot represents ALL agents. This person needed a damn good thrashing though. Angry

Their lists of requirement as to exactly how they want submissions certainly make them sound arrogant - very arrogant.

You are right!..Lots of agents can sound arrogant, Or be judged as such, but it's not really that. They are confident in what they like and often outspoken on blogs/twitter, but don't misread it as being rude.
I don't think its a horrible person, just beacause it's their view point!!

On the plus side...if they love your work, they will SHOUT about it in the same way!!!

Try following some more of them on twitter... even the excellent ones have tweets like.. " Slush pile is dire .. People, if you send to me, get it right..?! "

You'll soon learn that this is just "agent speak" and nothing more. No names are mentioned. It's just a call out to other agents who often tweet back similar responses!!..

Hope that helps.. close quotes

I know quite a lot of publishing people - as I said, I know it doesn't represent all of them. This person really got my back up though!

I say name and shame them!

We've had too much of this sort of thing, agents publicly bashing authors, and worse authors agreeing about how terrible other authors are. It's ridiculous, all jobs have annoying aspects. Who are these people to be constantly whining.

Good thing the publishing world is changing!

Yeah! There's been times when I've looked at agents' websites and thought, 'you can bugger off, I'm not sending you my work...' But then I've seen some that look open and friendly. And I know I don't have the upper hand or the choice but, I'd rather never get published than kiss someone's backside who was horrid.

Tweets are meant to be tongue in cheek. I doubt that was the only reason the agents rejected them, but it made a good anecdote in it's shorted form (140 characters, max).

That's so funny!

I mean, I can't stand arrogance either, but the agent on this site just seemed so sick of reading those kinds of queries!
