Necromancers hatch an elaborate plot to abduct Duke Wrightwood and have him possessed. As part of the plan, they enlist the aid of a witch in Martingis to delay Evan Pierce, a demon hunter and priest of St. Michael. Evan is passing through Martingis on his way home to Wrightwood Manor. The witch's strategy is simple, capture five girls and sacrifice them to a demon. Her plan works and delays Evan days longer than he intended.
By the time Evan discovers the truth, he is too late and must rush to save His Grace before the necromancers can complete their possession ritual and undermine the entire Duchy of Wrightwood. But even as Evan hastens to the rescue his liege, he learns that another Aglari is involved in the nefarious scheme.
