about me

This feels so personal...

I've completed two novels. I'm at work on my 3rd (comic fantasy/sci-fi), 4th (MG sci-fi), 5th (epic adventure/romance) and possibly 6th--all in a different genre than THE FAVOR. And if I can get THE FAVOR into shape, I might write the planned follow-up book in the series--I miss those guys.

Writing is fun, even the hard parts. And it gives me an excuse to talk to myself in the grocery store.

My working style has changed over the years due to a tendency to get mired down in editing. Now, I'm a little less of a pantser.
I hope the sharing process on authonomy will help me develop a more consistent and inviting voice in all my work. And I'd love to help others however I can.

The Moonflower Cure

jollyoldsaint

Whales are exploding. It's up to one sperm whale--Hal--and a guy named Bob, to save them...and the rest of the world...if only they knew that.

The seed of the Nottin Island Moonflower turns out to be more than one man's poison. When an innocent sperm whale becomes the propagative target of the rare and devious flower, a tour boat captain witnesses a telling side-effect: the whale's new-found flame-throwing ability. Egged on by a net-savvy surfer-in-need-of-a-home and with the incentive of spending more time with the surfer's painter-friend and fellow witness, Star, Captain Bob sets out to discover The Why and The How of Flame-throwing whales. Jed is a sick man. Jules is a sick man. Jed needs a cure. Jules may just be sick enough to find one. 'kay, I'm still working on this, but have a few chapters to post... :)

The Favor

jollyoldsaint

An accountant for a Florida-based crime syndicate schemes to fix his half-brother’s messed-up life, blowing up whatever’s in his way, including his brother.

Twenty-seven-year-old Leonard Gustafson is the sole moneyman for his aunt’s small crime syndicate. When he discovers his cousin-by-marriage has embezzled from the family business, he decides it’s time for a little payback. Thing is, Len owes his half-brother Hector payback of a different variety…and their cousin’s duplicity might be the answer.

If Len can hone his knowledge of explosives, dodge his aunt’s hired thug and keep his clothes on long enough, his plans might change the lives of a photographer, the owner of the island diner, a mechanic, a farmer, the mayor, the mayor’s wife, a waitress and a savvy young woman pretending to be a walking, talking Barbie…along with his and his brother’s.

Thanks for checking it out. I'm editing as I go (something which is threatening to suck the fun right out of it :)), so it's slow-going. But I'll definitely let you know when I post more chapters. view book

Thanks for taking a look. The general consensus has been the opposite on which beginning was weaker. Still don't feel like I've found The One on that. For the full structure of the novel, it's currently important to keep the prologue, which is actually something that happens later in the book. ... view book

Thanks so much for your comments, Shain. Re: Genre: It's a bit light for straight crime. Not really that "thrilling" :). I think of it as wannabe-Hiaasen light. He's generally classified as Florida crime comedy. Straight crime people wonder where the detective is or why it's not first person or f... view book

Thanks for trying it out, Maeve. People who don't like it seem to have the same problems with it that you have. People who do just do (therefore, no suggestions for improvement.) It definitely needs slimming--that's the kind of feedback I was hoping for: what one would lose and what one would kee... view book
