about me

Carrie L McRae: a 24 year-old aspiring novelist who feels like she will never accomplish anything worthwhile, but will most likely spend the rest of her life trying.

WARNING: I can be very critical with my reviews, but it's all done with the attitude of being a help. If you are looking for a glowing review you have one of two choices.

1. look elsewhere
2. have a fantastic, near-flawless or otherwise captivating piece of literature to offer me

Otherwise, you will get constructive criticism. I'm by no means an expert in any field, but I will be honest. Please don't let it offend you.

A HarperTeen editor called DUST IN THE WIND both "harrowing" and "frightening". The very same editor also used the term "strong" to describe my writing, even going as far as to say it was "very accomplished".... "concise, clear and accessible, but also filled with captivating imagery".

- Every word a writer pens can be likened to a flake of snow- the eye may not see its full design, and it may melt away in time, but it is still necessary that they fall. -Carrie L McRae

- One of the biggest challenges a writer faces, is living up to their own expectations of a good book. - Carrie L Mcrae

The Shades of Alabaster

Carrie L. McRae

If death was the only thing life guaranteed her, then Rhona was at least going to die with dignity.

Her whole life Rhona Gustave has felt the debasing ache of discrimination, being one of the few light-skinned people in the predominately dark-skinned society of Leotia. When an upper-class Leotian boy named Dmitri suddenly enters her life, it challenges everything she believes, but unforeseen events threaten to pull all that Rhona has ever cared for away from her. She has to make a choice between doing what is best for herself and what is best for her country, even if that means leaving Dmitri behind.

An adventurous fantasy novel set in a land that loosely parallels 18th century Europe, The Shades of Alabaster follows fourteen-year-old Rhona Gustave as she tries to make sense of her life; past, present and future.

Dust in the Wind

Carrie L McRae

History proves that man can be heartless—Mush, Turkey, 1918; Auschwitz, Germany, 1942—and now history is about to repeat itself.

Wyoming, America, 2028.

Tension of world war is at an all time high, and Aisha (Ay-sha) Gravis, the daughter of an ex-marine father and a Korean mother, is feeling it more than most. When fear sends the racial tension boiling over in her home town, her father fears for their safety and signs her mother and her over to the "Safe-Keepers" program; a program instated by the United States government to protect various races of first generation immigrants. But somewhere along the way something goes terribly wrong.

Do you know that feeling when each breath seems more than it’s worth, and yet part of you still fears it might be your last?

Aisha does.

UPDATE: Chapter Four is up.

Liz, Why hasn't this manuscript made the ED's desk yet? It's been on this site for over two years and it's brilliant!! It just depresses me to see this hanging where it's at. So unfair. view book

Hey Melissa, I read through chapter one of “Gut Instincts” and here are my thoughts. As it stands, I’m not crazy about this manuscript. There are quite a few flaws that hindered me from really getting into both the story and the characters. The title of you manuscript is pretty original and imme... view book

Hi Rena, I’ve read the first six chapters of Master of the Miracles and here are some of my thoughts. I am sort of torn over this manuscript so far. There are some really great elements here, but I felt like there were a few lacks as well. The premise of this manuscript is without a doubt, brill... view book

Saving Starfish- I really like the way that you've introduced this story. At first, I was taken aback by the sudden switching of POV, but once I grew accustomed to it, I found myself well grounded in your story. The way you bring to life both Albert's and Joseph's separate family relationships in th... view book

This is such a gem. Your style of writing and your characterization are both brilliant. I am thoroughly in love with Miah, and I have only just begun reading this (made it through the Prelude and chapter one) but I cannot wait to get on with reading the rest of this. Carrie L. McRae view book
