about me

I was born in South Africa. I live in Taiwan at present. I write every day.

My dream? To be a regularly published writer.

I just started an MFA in Creative Writing at the City University of Hong Kong.

***PLEASE NOTE***

I take things easy. I'm not in a rush to read and comment. I've become a dad to a beautiful little girl called Chloe. She was born on January 11th this year. And my wife is pregnant with a boy due March 2012.

Chapter 1 is a SYNOPSIS of "Tales Tell Tales". You're welcome to skip it. Chapter 2 is the start of the book.

Enjoy reading!

favourite books

I read a lot of different things. Recently finished "Letters to Sam" by Daniel Gottlieb. A great gift for grandparents!

Love the Artemis Fowl books and Darren Shan's work, not to mention Phillip Pullman's (His Dark Materials) and Diane Duane's Wizardry books (sad to hear she passed away recently).
I enjoy reading Asian writers like Banana Yoshimoto and Murakami. I really enjoyed Orhan Pamuk's "The Black Book" and Rohinton Mistry's "A Fine Balance." I'm quite fond of Terry Pratchett's wit and world. I also like Neil Gaiman.

Tales Tell Tales

Quenntis Ashby

A fantasy-horror-adventure about storytellers in danger because of the power of words, and Beast's insatiable hunger for more.

Eve is a new storyteller in need of rescue. She narrowly avoids being tortured and devoured by Mr. Wyn. But her best friend, Bethany, lies in a deadly coma because of her.

Eve’s Dear Diary forces her to pull words from the depths of her soul because it needs to devour her power and passion to open doorways for the evil Beast, its true master and creator.

Beast has already taken two important people through the Mirror Portals to Heaven; a Reader and a Writer, who are forced to read and write nonstop or face the unthinkable.

Who can stop the evil Beast and save Eve?

I have just finished the first 3 stories, and find them quite suitable for the age group you mentioned. I can even imagine acting them out - as I do with most stories I share with my kindergarten kids. They love pretending to be animals that can talk. I think the stories I've read are quite adaptabl... view book

Congrats on the medal and I liked the read. First Person POV alternating with third person and then the way you unfold the story with Adson coming to realise he's the bad guy really - yet there remains some sympathy for him. Interesting premise to have "It" merge into his heart, giving him power but... view book

Interesting premise. Dramatic tension from the start - a story about child abuse, and more. I'm already rooting for Daniel. I didn't have a problem with first person POV - although I really wanted to observe Daniel in action more before her collapse on stage. And perhaps a scene with the mom getting... view book

Hi, these are just my opnions - along with everybody else here who is trying to improve their storytelling skills etc etc etc... I would start your book with "Charlie" in Chapter 2. All the other information you are telling us before this part of chapter 2 can be included in fragments as the stor... view book

Hi Dawn, I like the POV of the foal - it makes the writing more internal and quite lyrical at times. I've read the 4 chapers you've posted here and feel your prose is quite poetic. "never ending sea of living ground" is just 1 phrase that springs to mind (I might just use that in a poem... hehehe...... view book
