about me

Bill Powell grew up in and around Birmingham. He was educated at King Edward’s School, Birmingham, and gained a scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge to study Natural Sciences. Leaving Clare College in 1980 with a BA in Computer Science, he entered the computer industry, which is where he has been ever since.
In his spare time, Bill is a keen amateur musician, singing tenor and playing guitar, bass and drums, as well as writing songs. He was bass player and backing vocalist with a Rock’n’Roll band - the fun-but-obscure Ken Wood and the Mixers - for about 15 years, occasionally touring Germany with them in a battered transit van.
Bill is married with two young sons. He is currently living in Buckinghamshire.
Bill started writing in 2002 and has completed five novels, including 'Dial M for Magic', but has yet to place any of them with a publisher.

Dial M for Magic

Bill Powell

Young Sam Kenwright is a good copper, but who wants to face villains armed with magic? And why is England a province of Spain?

Sam Kenwight is just a young police cadet patrolling the streets of London, when he stumbles on a jewel robbery. Unfortunately the thieves are better armed, smarter, and rather pretty, too. So when the magic wears off the next morning and Sam can move again, he sets off to uncover the villains. Aided by a street urchin called Meric, the horse-girl Rhosyn and Sally, the politician's daughter, he follows the trail through Spanish London. Along the way they encounter a den of illegal scientists, a truly magical play, the destruction of the Tower of London, a kidnapping, and a clandestine performance of a play by the banned author, William Shakespeare.

Are the villains simply jewel thieves, though? Or are there more sinister motives? Somebody wants to free England from the Spanish, certainly. But there's blood-revenge in the mix, and the Portuguese Secret Service too, and Sam's got to figure it all out, get the girl and save the world.

Hi Jak That is extremely helpful - as you say prologues can be so irritating. But revealing key facts at the point the reader wants to know is hard, and clearly there are a few places I've been late in revealing stuff. I think Sam's age is certainly one of those important facts. Thaum is provi... view book

I've read the first couple of chapters and this falls far short of some of the excellent fiction I've read elsewhere on Authonomy. It reminds me of the style of science fiction's "Golden Age", when clean-cut college kids roamed the spaceways and wisecracked their way to the secrets of the univers... view book

Just finished "A delivered sign" and felt confused by the character of the Pastor. In the opening paragraphs you build some sympathy for him, as he feels they're a family again. But you quickly tear him down again and he becomes a religious bigot, an easy target for hatred. Then, with all sympath... view book

Hi Digger, RobertB I guess I'd better upload a few more chapters (the novel is complete, but I was testing the water), because the answers to your questions are revealed in later chapters. "thaum" - I wanted a word that meant magic, but didn't have the connotations of witchcraft (because of course... view book
