"The Final Cruise" is a story of old maps and new territories, of odd, hidden treasures and one man's pursuit of happiness.
A youngster named T.J. flees Manchester in a wretched coal barge: Family conflicts and poverty drive him until, as an old man, he faces his final cruise.
Eccentric characters abound, such as the rugged and audacious "Captain Georgie", who explains life and religion to his. weather beaten, desperate crew.
They peer at an ancient map and a depiction of the Wheel of Samsara.
"Where shall we go?" Georgie asks. "The New Jerusalem? The Celestial City? The Lake of Fire? Would you like to sleep forever with a brother of Zeus?"
"How about the Holy Bible?" Someone inevitably asks.
Trouble follows, and the captain, exhausted, explodes: "That's it; I quit," he screams. "Let T.J. be your new boss!" A groan goes up from the crowd. "And his wife Elizabeth is now your new first mate!"
"No way!" A hundred voices exclaim. The sky darkens and thunder rolls and everyone panics. Captain Georgie presents a democratic dilemma: "Which way shall we go? Choose your own storm, men. ... And choose your own Heaven or Hell, by God! Be men for once!"
