about me

The stone the builder refused

Not much I have to lose, just a great deal to prove

Boulder on my shoulder

Why ask why

In vain is insane...You'll surprise yourself when you apply yourself

About me, I feel humility can take your far. Accountability is very necessary. Author is such a soft word in my personal opinion. I consider myself a writer. It's so much more provocative. Edgy. Has a 'starving artist' ring to it. A writer is so much more...a poet, an artist, a philosopher, a student of life, and a manipulator of language.

My content is urban and gritty. Literary ability still lies beneath my mentality nonetheless. I may refine certain things but at the core I am who, as well as what, I am and I'm proud of it. Suppose I've been desensitized by growing up amidst debauchery.

***For the record, I don't care about the ED. I don't get caught up in the hype because my content isn't what Harper Collins seeks. I'm perfectly okay with that. I only look for constructive crit. and I'm only here to network. I have 6 titles, only four have been submitted, that I labor to edit and polish to a shine with every spare minute I have. It may be foolish to take on so much at a time and I can only hope I haven't spread myself too thin but it's just the way I am. So bear with me if I owe you a return read. It may take a while but I haven't forgotten about you.

To all the readers who gloss over my work in anonymity and refrain from commenting only to fix their crosshairs on the star rating of my material, plunging it into the woeful 3's, you have been acknowledged and you're welcome.

I suppose I come off as a jerk. But I'm a forthright, unapologetic, cool jerk. Stay thirsty my "friends."

In a long delayed epiphany I have discovered that writers shouldn't chastise themselves concerning content. You may think your content isn't significant/relevant/a big deal. As a writer it is your aim to Make it a big deal in your own unique way. So do your thing. In a way that only You can do it. Godspeed. The End.

Never make light of what you do. Some people say being an author is an easy, lazy, wish-washy way to earn a living, if, in fact, you are being compensated for your writing. That may or may not be true but if the free world and modern civilization as we know them came crashing down on our collective heads I would continue to write my thoughts...in the sand.

What We Can't Have

Shaun Graves

Resilience equals brilliance but it's easier said than done. The unknown can be fatal...

Horace Giles is learning the hard way that a degree isn't a shield from life's hard knocks. After a stinging incident of wrongful termination derails him from the fast track to success he's trying to pick up the pieces and in the process he realizes that his friendship with his childhood friend is in a state he never wanted it.

In a surprising turn of fate an intriguing, enigmatic woman comes back into the picture. The strikingly beautiful Jamela Sterling reinserts herself back into his life with persistence despite vanishing for months after spending only a few hours with him on the fateful night they met. Jamela’s beauty and physical magnificence can’t hide psychological damage, however, and Horace is repeatedly issued warnings that she is not to be trusted.

A chilling revelation rocks Jamela. Both rumors and a murder thirteen years ago threaten to jeopardize the love she pursues with Horace. Discovering the identities of both the killer and the person who thirsts for vengeance set into motion a series of events sure to leave more death in its wake. Amidst battles of morals and displays of blatant treachery, a mystery unravels that could claim Horace's life.

Bad Blood

Shaun Graves

The threads of fate pass through the eyelets of God's needles, intertwining in delayed aquiescence. Vague intents breed scorned seeds of contempt.

Disenchantment and distractions begin to convince the bright overachiever, Maisha, to venture away from her hometown of Staten Island, NY. Sharing an up and down, sometimes stormy relationship with her mother embeds a skepticism inside her that doesn't depart after their relationship starts to even out. Her uncertainty only grows when her mother speaks of a confession that she can never seem to summon the nerve to divulge. The feeling of alienation only grows when Maisha's incarcerated father also fails to clue her in. Seeking clarity, Maisha transfers south, taking up residence with her aunt despite her boyfriend urging her to remain in New York.

Elsewhere a blue-chip college basketball prospect, Jamir, struggles with his own issues concerning clarity. Harsh realities he only continues to deny constantly follow him. Art offers refuge but when a classmate of his is wronged it gets him in trouble that he can't begin to anticipate. His unorthodox path to righteousness leads him to the very haunting issues he's hesitant to confront, revealing many things about himself that he must struggle to cope with.

Secrecy paired with deceit gives new meaning to the phrase bad blood...and consequently someone's blood will have to be spilled...

Fruit of the Poisonous Tree

Shaun Graves

When aspirations are bound by a solemn promise Ty is forced to make difficult decisions to keep his priorities in tact.

Tyson Dixon is a talented musician with more than his share of responsibilities as well as distractions. With his mother deceased Ty feels enormous pressure to care for his sister and his niece. Vowing to his mother to never turn his back on his music he has every intention of keeping his promise.

In futile attempts to sever ties with his wayward, insufferable girlfriend Ciarra "Coffee" McCallister Ty manages to land himself in a love triangle.

In the bright attorney KiYana Moses Ty sees a woman who is supportive of his craft and sensitive to his obligation to provide for the only remaining family he has. The devious Ciarra is envious of the attention that both his music and his family garner from him. Feeling slighted she grows more unpredictable as Ty draws nearer to success.

Both Ty and KiYana experience firsthand that jealousy isn't as weak an emotion as it's made out to be. The distinction between friend and foe becomes increasingly nebulous in this story of unflinching ambition and devotion.

Growing Pains

Shaun Graves

"In life, as in dreams, nothing is quite what it seems..."

Outwardly Ramona Carter seems to have it all. However, in her opinion her life is hell.

Though she loves her parents and wouldn't choose a different pair if she could, they both impose their individual wills into her life in the worst ways. She only wants the chance to make something of herself but she receives no support from either of them.

Enter Tariq Copeland. A state renown barber and entrepreneur, Tariq's path coincides with that of Ramona and they both fall in love although Tariq is reluctant to admit it. Tariq epitomizes the stability and support that she has sought for so long.

Her parents get wind of the upgrade to her love life and they proceed promptly to do everything in their power to ruin it. Ramona refuses to be deterred, however, and she attempts to run away to seek better fortunes for herself. Her arduous journey proves to be more of a challenge than she anticipated and she does much needed self-searching as she pursues the self-actualization that seems to elude her.

In this suspenseful story both Ramona and Tariq discover that there is little progress without pain and sacrifice.

I just started reading this today and I'm already in chapter 3. I really like this. I can't get enough of reading about our military and especially about the war in Afghanistan. My cousin was married to somebody who went on, I know, more than three tours of duty. He told me about IED's in animal... view book

I've read chapter 2 and I love your imagery. Reading of how war affected different countries is enlightening while at the same time very easy to relate to. "My isolation felt like a dark silent jungle, the clamoring solitude of a thousand years blowing through my heart..." It's gems like this... view book

This is lit. fic. at some of its finest and a major reason why I love it so much. It's the description that jumped out at me initially. A man, who I presume is Ernest's father, is watching his life slip away. It reminds me a lot of what I learned in History of Lockheed's and many civilians having... view book

Cuz...All I can say is Raw. The sad thing is, people won't really see the most important part. And that's the message. I can only hope readers can appreciate the intense action and also get to the the meat of it. Your main character Sin is Thorough. He's definitely going to make your reader... view book

You write about this period in history as if you were actually there, obviously the result of meticulous research. Commend you on that. I, for one, like stories that chronicle a fall from grace and narrate how a character overcomes that inner struggle. Some may call it cliche but I feel it's some... view book
