about me

I am a published, literary-fiction writer from Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland, represented by a literary agent. In 2009 I attended the Faber & Faber Writing Academy. I work closely with the NI Arts Council who back my work through funding, advice and guidance and am also a member of the Newman Writers Group.

Some of my short stories have been published alongside prestigious authors such as Hilary Mantel, Louis De Bernieres, Lionel Shriver and Alexander McCall Smith by Ether Books. You can download four of my short stories onto your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch using the Ether Books App, which is available from the Apple Store or www.etherbooks.co.uk

My short story 'A Quarter Yellow Sun' was recently nominated for 'The Pushcart Prize' which has previously recognised writers such as Raymond Carver, Andre Dubus and John Irving.

Titles available:

Changes
A Quarter Yellow Sun
Christmas
Mr. Chen and the Nightingale

I am currently writing short stories for a collection and working on my second novel.

Part of my completed (unpublished), debut novel A MAN IN GREY SHOES is available to read here on authonomy.

Hi Fletcher, I read one of your stories 'Irrestible Temptation'. Have been thinking about this overnight and here is the best advice I can give you. 1. Think strongly about the logistics of a story, if someone is walking down a lane, describe it a little and lead us into the story, set the scene.... view book

Hi Charles, I read one of your short stories – Despair. This is a really excellent idea for a short story. I think with some more work, maybe another 2 or 3 edits, this could be really good. Some suggestions: You really need to watch out for clichés (and there are quite a lot of them). If your... view book

Hi Innes, I have read a bit of this. Firstly, I've read enough of this to know that you can write, that you have talent and that you can probably make this publishable. Writing is about two main things for me: how the words hang together (flow, style etc) what the words are saying (the actua... view book

Hi Frank, I have a few suggestions for you. I think as it stands, this book is close to being publishable, reads quite well and you have the knack down alright for telling a good story. The voice is also good. What you you should think about is that when an agent or an editor reads a manuscript... view book
