The Fragility of Meaning

Davy Hackett

A family torn apart by conflict in Kosovo are transported to London where they attempt to rebuild their shattered lives one piece at a time.

After paramilitaries attack Aferdita’s village she loses everything: her husband, her homeland, her children. Found, wounded and discarded, by a NATO patrol, she is brought to England for live-saving surgery. After years of counselling she is finally beginning to come to terms with her past and dare to dream of some kind of future.

Bora was stolen from Kosovo and brought to England in the back of a transit van. To deal with the depravity of her forced existence she fantasises about travelling to the outer reaches of the galaxy. Peace and beauty to overcome the chaos and hatred she experiences daily.

Fatjon travelled across Europe with a bicycle and a knife to find his family. They think he is dead, and he suspects they might be too, but a promise is a promise.

Bojan was always in love with Aferdita, but duty came first and he let her slip from his grasp. Twenty years later he is ordered to command the attack on her village.

Jeremiah is an angel. He thinks.

An important and forceful subject matter treated with care and skill. The imagery really works to evoke the scenes in my mind and the sparseness of some of the prose only serves to embellish the emotion of the situations in my view. Dramatic, engaging and flows really well, a thoroughly enjoyabl... view book

I was attracted to ‘The Last Time We Saw Marion’ by the opening line of the synopsis as I am interested in who authors deal with the potentially thorny notion of identity. Nice opening lines to both the prologue and chapter 1 that instantly urge the reader on. The prose flows well, with good use of ... view book

Firstly, the prose is very well written with some purposeful choices of language and style that bring vim to proceedings rarely seen in writing I’ve seen recently. It also has a lot of humour weaving its merry way throughout the extract. Dogge is an intriguing character whose mind is presented in a ... view book

Hi Lorri I've been reading this with Requiem for a Dream in the background ... I'm going to have some screwed up dreams tonight. Really interesting concept and well written judging by the sections I've read thus far. Will come back for more, backed in the meantime. Best wishes, Dave view book

Hi Mike, Okay, I’ve read the rest of what’s up here and I it’s got me hooked. The characters are well thought out with good distinguishing traits and believable dialogue; the plot is unfolding well and promises plenty of edge of the seat twists and turns. I can picture the scenes, and can imagine... view book
