about me

I am first and foremost a homeschooling momma. I write by moonlight, by dusk and by dawn, and the occasional quiet moment. I began writing when I was very young. When I was five I used the blank pages of one of my grandmother's antique books to scrawl the beginnings of what was probably my first story 'Once upon a time....' Of course it was followed by a rather interpretive unicorn scribble, but I must admit, I probably couldn't spell unicorn at the time! I have written all of my life. In high school I submersed myself in prose, poetry and short stories. In college I attempted to major in literature. I failed. I really just wanted to write. Writing for me has been a channel for healing in a difficult life, an escape from reality, a form of expression, proof to myself that so long as I can write about it, true love, honor, devotion and all that is good will always exist.

Where am I going with this? It's the journey, not the destination. I want to share the dreams in my head with those who enjoy slipping into a good story. I want to read others works and be inspired. I want to network with people who live to write, like me.

favourite books

Off the top of my head:

Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit
Outlander Series
A Midsummer Night's Dream

Oscar Wilde
Henry David Thoreau
Shakespeare

I am a fan of descriptive writing. I love language, I want to savor words and immerse myself.

As for my day-to-day reading, I read mostly non-fiction. Andrew Weil, Deepak Chopra, spiritual books and books on nutrition and natural living.

Brundelwain

Eleanor Raif

Brundelwain is a sweeping medieval tale of love forged by hardship and circumstance, a Scottish knight and a noble woman whose fate becomes entangled.

Follow the lives of Lady Alana Stewart, a young noble woman, and Sir Aldyn MacDowell, a respected commander in Scotland, at the dawning of the fourteenth century. Scarcely has she left her childhood and an impending marriage is bearing down on her like a ruthless beast. Seven years her senior, Aldyn has known both great success and great tragedy. When she is faced with heartbreaking loss it is his strength that sees her through and from their pain springs a bond that can’t be broken.

Their arrival at Brundelwain is the door to the future, one wrought from blood, sweat and tears. She enters marriage and he is hurtled into war. In the hands of an unpredictable Earl, will a dangerous secret unravel their fate?
Guilt and shame. War and loss. Brundelwain doesn't sugar-coat the medieval world, it is a gritty tale of life, of love, of heartache, of motherhood, of growing up and chasing your dreams, even if the years find that they have greatly changed.

WARNING: Detailed descriptions of sex scenes, childbirth, rape and wounds. It is the middle ages, after all.

I have enjoyed reading this so far. It is an excellent account of a life well-begun thus far. Despite what seemed to happen to you later on (haven't got there yet) at least life started out with you as a 'little prince'. It is well written and well described - all of the events and especially ... view book

I was unsure in the first chapter. This seems to be a frequent occurrence with me on this site. First chapters can be wildly confusing. Still. I kept at it and was much more satisfied with chapter 2, which really got me interested in reading more. You do an excellent job here warming us up to A... view book

This has been on my watchlist for a while. I love this book so far. I can completely relate. Except that I am a woman. Looking forward to reading more of it. As soon as there is space I will give it a bit of time on my bookshelf. ~E Raif view book

Exciting work, Melanie! I did like it. As per my own reading style, (and I am perhaps not the average Authonomy reader) I like to have a little more of a glimpse into the surroundings and into the physical and personality traits of the characters. I suppose it comes from me being so visual in ... view book
