about me

One time merchant seaman, salesman, teacher, college lecturer, company director, mushroom-farmer, philosopher and inveterate reprobate.

Now striving (not too hard) to become a genuine 'Renaissance Man,' pursuing the questionable consolation of writing, photography, poetry and music, all activities which are only tolerable, because they are punctuated by periods of alcoholic euphoria and profound idleness.

Believer in the values of 'The Enlightenment.' Opponent of multiculturalism and political correctness in all their idiotic manifestations. Hater of moral and cultural relativism. Lover of freedom of speech and enemy of all censorship and faith based tyranny.

Sympathetic to the Victor Meldrew view of the Universe.

My first novel was published last year and I've almost finished writing my next, which is entitled: 'The Incredible Layla Moon.' The first eight chapters of this new book are now available here. I hope you will read them and post your comments.

I'd be very grateful to learn of any errors you may find in my manuscript.

Thanks! James. ;-))

The Incredible Layla Moon

James Rainsford

The comic and irreverent story of an amazing child, with remarkable and ultimately, terrifying powers.

A black and compelling comedy, telling the outrageous story of Layla Lucrezia Moon, a highly intelligent, manipulative and charismatic child, whose origins are deeply enigmatic and mysterious.

It relates Layla's life story from conception to adulthood and details her many trials and tribulations, as her unusual talents slowly emerge to affect all who surround her.

The book shines a humorous and penetrating light into many profane and sacred arenas, particularly, the worlds of education and religion. It is a zany tale, which satirises the vanities of wealth, privilege and earthly ambition.

Subtitled 'An Entertainment' and definitely written for an adult and mature readership, it aims to divert and delight all those brave enough to enter Layla's dark and demonic world.

This is my second novel and is nearing completion. Further chapters will be added if readers find Layla's story of interest.

If you comment on my book I'll try to reciprocate asap. I'll also back all books I enjoy reading.

I believe that a book is like a mirror. If an ass peers into it, you cannot expect a person of discernment to look out.

Sharp and sometimes well written. I thought the prologue overly long and am not convinced that it was really necessary. Reading on, I found the short, often staccato sentences irritating. The writing is typical of much modern American fiction, which by its simplicity seems to (probably correctly) a... view book

The start here is the literary equivalent of watching paint dry. I found the writing turgid and contrived. I read the whole of Chapters 1 and 2. What I've read so far, gives me no incentive to continue. The narrative is disjointed and the dialogue was extraordinarily difficult to follow, as it was o... view book

This is not a genre I would normally choose to read, but I'm glad I did. The prose is so unobtrusive that I was quickly so absorbed in the story I had no time to be critically aware of possible faults. Well written and interesting. I wish you well with it. Kind regards, James Rainsford. (The Incr... view book

A captivating beginning. Well written, with a great ear for dialogue and flashes of humour. Backed with pleasure. James. ( The Incredible Layla Moon) view book

This genre is not one I would usually choose to read, but as you've been thoughtful enough to offer suggestions as to how I may improve my own book, I decided to read your book, to see if I could be equally constructive. Firstly, I found the beginning of your story extremely confusing. Who is the '... view book
