about me

I have taken down my novel -- FINDING RITA (formerly known as THE WHOLE CLOVE DIET) -- as I needed to get back to my writing. The feedback I have received from Authonomites will be very useful and I thank you all for it.

I will be around from time to time to throw flames on fires or start new ones, as well as to indulge in the usual shameless self-promotion if I ever have anything to promote. In the meantime, you can find me through my websites, and especially my blog site, The Militant Writer at WordPress (link below), where I invite feedback on my opinion pieces (aka rants) about writing and publishing.

I have published two novels (THE WOMAN UPSTAIRS and BITTERS) with NeWest Press and COOL a collection of short stories (River Books). My first book of nonfiction (Write An Effective Funding Application: A Guide for Researchers and Scholars) has just been published by The Johns Hopkins University Press.

favourite books

2666 (new favourite), The Book of Dave, Midnight's Children, Possession, Animal Dreams, Sacred Games, The Road, Netherland, In Search of Lost Time, Gilead, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, many many others. See my book review blog for details.

This is a very moving story, and I commend you for writing it. I am more than happy to put it on my shelf, and I wish you success with it. Best wishes, Mary view book

Your writing is very good, Sheryl. The opening scene is convincing -- Amber has planned out this murder but it's not as easy as she thinks it's going to be. It will be interesting to see what the effects of it are on her. And I've read into the next section and commend you on the way you've develope... view book

Interesting set-up. You've created characters that are easy to like -- Linda, a nice woman with an interesting business, Martin, who seems to genuinely love his mom and be a great husband to his wife... even Priscilla is likable when she isn't killing people. In fact, she may be a little too likable... view book

Hi, Misha, I really enjoyed reading this. Not only was it a pleasure to read non-fiction for a change, it was also a really interesting subject for me to read about. I have been on two cruises because my elderly aunt needed some companionship, not because I would ever have chosen to take that kin... view book

Hi, Ayrich, You've set up an intriguing plot here and I am certain you have already established enough threads in the first few chapters to keep the novel going and interesting for quite some time! I am very happy to know that there actually is at least one person whose job it is to enforce M... view book
