about me

Not much to say. I burned out of the whole 'promote your own writing' thing here and elsewhere relatively early in the process. I still write like a fiend when life allows, and still strive for art and perfection, but don't really care if I ever get published.

That said, I enjoy coming here to read and back new things, although I don't have time enough to comment very often. I love peeking at at all of the wonderful new indie imaginations at work here. Sometimes it feels like I have a better chance of finding something I like to read here, than in my local book shop. Sure, many are rough around the edges and have rickety, incomplete structures, but so do I.

Lassoed, knocked down, face planted in the dirt -- best thing to happen to Frank Bowen in years.

Liz Bowen, wife of mission doctor Frank Bowen, goes missing in the wilds of Belize. The constables of San Ignacio can find no trace of her. On a pilgrimage years later to her remote 'grave', Frank is abducted and whisked away to a place he can't identify, by people whose motives and origins baffle him. Could this be what happened to Liz? Might she still be alive?

No more backings or comments required, thank you, but I'm glad to look at your material.

I've put this book to bed while I move on to other projects. Thanks for having a look-see.

Sonant

A. Sparrow

Something strange lurks in a bell jar in a wealthy eccentric's music room, feeding on the unearthly sounds his musical mercenaries create.

A failed odyssey in professional jazz sends bassist Aerie Walker retreating to her hometown of Ithaca, New York. Thwarted in efforts to begin a new life, she finds herself lured back to performing by a reclusive musical alchemist who's holding auditions for a strange combo in a house more instrument than dwelling. Her fate as well as the earth's lies somewhere between the notes of her bass lines.

Lethe

A. Sparrow

God is an absentee landlord in Lethe, where unfinished souls come to forget their lives. Newly deceased, Dan Tompkins wants out.

“Welcome to Lethe! Just so you know, kid, this ain’t Heaven or Hell. It’s Lethe. You can't die here. You're already dead. But you can be Collected. You might look pretty now, but lose your blood and you stop healing. You get uglier and slower until you can’t run from the Collectors any more. Of course, the Guides expect you to Ascend before any of that happens, but I guess they never counted on so many of us slackers. It don’t matter, though. I don’t plan to stick around long. I’ve got a hunch. There’s a way back for souls like us.”

This is fun! Tons of verve and spotless writing. I like your characters from the first time I meet them. I feel right at home in your universe, and certainly if I had thumbed through this in a book shop I would have been impressed enough to consider buying (as long as you had a sufficiently cool co... view book

Yuck. That prologue was certainly embarrassing. I've gone back in and spruced it up based on Robert's comments. It's still needs revision, but the earlier version retained fragments and splices that were intended for deletion. At least now it's a little less messy. The second meaning of 'extrad... view book

Competent and engaging. Lean and mean descriptions. Efficient dialogue, although I wouldn't have minded a little bit more quirkiness in the characters to help them stand out. It doesn't even have to be quirk, just a little more detail about their individuality to help them feel more real. I don't... view book

This is really charming and funny. The pacing gets a little bit slow from time to time. I don't mind, but some readers might. typo : Chapter 6 scull (skull) view book

Pretty intense writing. Very effective and compelling emotionally. The intensity makes for a gripping beginning, though I hope it calms down a bit from time to time to give the reader a breather. (It does, I read on to Chapter 2). I loves the setting and description. Funny I live in Boston a... view book
