favourite books

Love the Modernists. Increasingly in awe over subtle simplicity, so I'm a big fan of the contemporary minimalists. But I also love an enjammed sentence, a lyrical passage, and prose that sings. My favorite writers are nothing less than brilliant and the list is long. For fiction, I read literary writers almost exclusively, though I wish more of them didn't limit themselves by sticking with realism.

The Snow Whale

John Minichillo

A contemporary retelling of Moby-Dick. Forthcoming from Atticus Books July 30, 2011.

Forthcoming from Atticus Books late summer / early fall.

Mini-synopsis: mild-mannered white guy with office job gets DNA test,
learns he’s Inuit, joins whale hunt in Alaska under tribal rights,
battles white whale, returns home changed.

An earlier draft of the novel was named a semi-finalist in the Amazon
Breakthrough Novel Awards, and the Publisher’s Weekly reviewer, as
part of the contest, said, “...the author demonstrates a profound
knowledge of Inuit culture with conflicts between modern and
traditional woven deftly into the narrative.” Since then, the novel
has been through extensive revision with special attention to
character. It’s a book about race, global warming, and the quest for
genuine experience.

Pat, This one owes more to films like Godzilla and King Kong than to any book. Since it follows a film genre, the visual presentation is key and you've got some really interesting things with POV, with more of a miniaturized set than a setting. The cast is mostly pedestrian, some who bite it, ... view book

Marit, this is nuts. I can't believe that anyone would pursue such a conceit, but you are dedicated to it, and you pull it off. This is a really challenging idea but it's given you some wonderful chapters. The rest of us should maybe be more bold. view book

Enda, I'm in. The sense of pacing, the attention to detail, the recurring taste of bile, the underlying sense that something, maybe everything, is about to go horribly wrong. I'm confident that I'm in the hands of someone who knows what he's doing and the story will payoff. The observations ar... view book
