about me

I live in Atlanta, Georgia, USA with my husband, Jim. "Dumbin' Down" is my first novel. The story is based loosely on my family history, or more accurately, on my family's conversations. The book came out of a years long genealogy project. I was intrigued at the differences between oft repeated family stories and the documents I was finding. It appears that who we were as a family was not the creative stories my mother and aunts' told, but actually something richer and more complex. It was then that I started to question all that I thought I knew about the women in my family. "Dumbin' Down" is not autobiographical, nor is it factual. Instead, it's a sort of poetic tribute to the women that dominated my early life.

Dumbin' Down

Sandy Arnold

Set in Newport, Kentucky from 1926 to 1947, "Dumbin' Down" is a gritty look at the lives of 3 generations of Southern Women.

Newport, Kentucky was the "sin city of the South" in 1926, the year our book opens. "Dumbin' Down" tells its story, as seen through the eyes of three generations of Southern women. This is no tale of sisterhood. These women survive mob violence, incest, domestic abuse, alcoholism and teen pregnancy with both humor and an unflinching realism. An epic novel that spans 1926 to 1947, Bertha, Lucy and Dolly live through Prohibition, the Great Depression, the Great Flood of 1937 and World War II. Grandmother, mother and daughter, each vie for the attentions of the men around them. Sometimes they're aligned, sometimes they're in competition with each ot'her. The one unwavering truth for these women is that the only way to survive is to find a man and bring him to the altar. "Dumbin' Down is their manual for how to do this. Each woman learns from the generation that precedes them. Follow these terribly flawed but courageous women as they stumble, fall and triumph over an era and place that gives little quarter to the weak or foolish.

I'm now a little less than halfway through your book. I wasn't going to comment until I finished the book, but my mind is racing and I haven't been able to sleep without getting off this comment. First of all, I'm really engaged in this book. I don't like romance novels and your book is clearly i... view book

The story really gets better as the book progesses, although it's not as carefully written. I'll put in on my bookshelf now, but will continue reading it until chapter 16. You need to put the same care into the subsequent chapters as you did in chapter 1. Sandy Arnold view book

I just completed the first chapter. I'll certainly read your book through to the end. Your writing is very, very skillful. It was a pleasure reading. And the story has a real hook. Where are the other three books that precede this fourth one? Have they been published? Living in Atlanta, it's ... view book

OK. Just finished what you've written so far. Of course, the technology is amazing. I particularly enjoyed the amusement park and the store. You're really brilliant at imagining what is possible in the future. I thought the dialogue moved the book quickly, and I liked all of the characters. Th... view book

Read through chapter 4, but need to go to bed. Great story. It will be fun following your book and seeing what happens to it. You deserve to have it published. I'll read it to completion. Sandy Arnold view book
