about me

Hi there, my name's Dan and I live in Nottingham, England. I really enjoy writing but feel I've still got a lot to learn - 'The Elemental Warrior' was my first book and I'm the first to admit that it's pretty rough around the edges. I entered it into the Times/Chicken House Children's Fiction Competition 2009 and made it through to the last few, but in the end it was rejected (apparently it 'lacks internal consistency'. I sometimes lie awake at night trying to figure that one out.)
Since then It's been gathering dust, so I was really pleased to stumble across this fantastic site and, hopefully, get some feedback and advice - be as brutal as you like; it's the only way I'll learn!
I'm currently working on my second book; a sci-fi thriller aimed at young adults, which I hope to have finished in the new year.

favourite books

Pretty much any comic (I know, I know - I just never grew out of them!)
Douglas Adams (still can’t believe he died. Massively inconsiderate)
PG Wodehouse
The Gormenghast trilogy - Mervyn Peake (I like his illustrative work even more, an absolute genius. Bit bonkers though.)
J.K. Rowling - reminded me of being a kid and snuggling down with a book full of magic and heroes.
Philip Pullman
Stephen King – probably The Stand (although I love the short story collections as well)
Roald Dahl - anything
Maurice Sendak – In the Night Kitchen
Jerome K. Jerome - Three Men in a Boat

The Elemental Warrior

Daniel Cullen

Buried deep beneath the Derbyshire Dales lies a terrible secret, waiting to be unleashed...

Jack McKnight has just left London to live in the middle of nowhere - or 'Derbyshire' as his parents call it. He's lonely, misunderstood and angry; in other words a typical twelve year old. But when he discovers an ancient alien spacecraft hidden beneath the Derbyshire dales and unleashes the power of the Elemental, he realises that his real problems have only just begun... His power? The Elemental; control over the four elements of earth, water, air and fire. Local girl Helen comes to his defence when these new abilities get him into trouble with the school bully and they strike up a strong but turbulent friendship. Together with Pye (an abusive space-travelling adventurer trapped in a tiny glass bubble), and the Salymanders (a race of short hairy creatures living in a secret underground kingdom called Narrowdark), they must try to understand Jack’s power in time to stop a deadly evil that threatens not just them, but the entire planet.

Hi Andrew - thanks for the feedback. I haven't had much time to look around the site yet (thus the late-night reply!) but will certainly take a read through your work. Cheers, Dan view book
